Thousands Urged to Apply for School Clothing Allowance Before Deadline

Thousands of families in Ireland are encouraged to apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) before the scheme closes on 30 September 2025. This payment aims to assist households with the costs associated with purchasing school uniforms and shoes. Families with children aged between four and eleven on 30 September may receive a cash boost of €160, while those with children aged between twelve and twenty-two could qualify for €285.

The BSCFA has been a vital support for many families, and officials emphasize the importance of submitting applications before the deadline. Most families automatically qualify for the allowance, particularly if they are already receiving certain social welfare payments. Those who are automatically qualified should have received notification by 4 June 2025. If no notification has been received, families are advised to submit an application to ensure they do not miss out on this financial aid.

To be eligible for the BSCFA, applicants must meet specific criteria. Families must have a child who is a resident in Ireland and meets the age requirements. Furthermore, families must be receiving a social welfare payment that includes a Child Support Payment, formerly known as an Increase for a Qualified Child or IQC. There are some exceptions to this requirement; even if a family does not receive a Child Support Payment, they may still be able to apply if they meet other eligibility criteria.

It is important to note that foster children are not eligible for the BSCFA. Foster parents receive a Foster Care Allowance, which includes assistance for clothing and footwear costs for the children in their care. Families are encouraged to check their eligibility and ensure they have all necessary information before applying.

For those looking to apply or seeking further information, details on the application process can be found on official government websites. As the deadline approaches, families are reminded to act swiftly to secure this essential support.
