Tuam Council Evaluates New Parking Solutions for Shoppers
Galway County Council is actively exploring options to enhance parking facilities in Tuam, following concerns raised by local businesses and shoppers. At a recent meeting, councillors received a delegation representing local businesses, who presented a survey signed by 1,800 shoppers. The survey highlighted frustrations regarding the current parking situation and its adverse effects on Tuam’s appeal as a shopping destination.
Council management confirmed that they are investigating a variety of solutions to address the longstanding parking issues in the area. One of the primary options under consideration is the establishment of a long-term parking facility in an open area located behind O’Toole’s SuperValu. This potential site could alleviate some of the pressure on existing parking spaces, which have been deemed insufficient by both shoppers and business owners.
Councillor Karey McHugh-Farag, an independent member of the council, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that inaction is not a viable option. She articulated the need for timely and effective solutions to ensure that Tuam remains a competitive shopping hub. The council is keen to engage with the community to gather further input and ideas regarding parking improvements.
The issue of parking in Tuam has been a growing concern, particularly as more shoppers express their dissatisfaction with available facilities. During the meeting, local business representatives underscored the economic implications of inadequate parking, noting that it could deter potential customers from visiting the area.
As discussions progress, the council aims to prioritize options that not only enhance parking capacity but also improve the overall shopping experience in Tuam. The outcome of these deliberations will be crucial in shaping the future of the town’s retail environment.
Community engagement will play a significant role in the decision-making process, with the council encouraging residents and business owners to share their thoughts on the proposed parking solutions. Further updates are expected as the council continues to explore these options in the coming weeks.
By addressing the parking challenges, Galway County Council hopes to strengthen Tuam’s position as a vibrant shopping destination, ensuring that both residents and visitors can enjoy convenient access to local businesses.
