Pop artist and LGBTQ+ advocate Chappell Roan has launched The Midwest Princess Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities across the United States. Announced on October 24, 2023, via social media, the initiative underscores Roan’s commitment to queer empowerment and joy, stemming from her acclaimed debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

Roan expressed her excitement about the project on Instagram, stating, “I am so excited to announce @midwestprincessproject, an organisation we’ve launched to provide support and needed resources for trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.” The initiative has already garnered significant financial support, raising over $400,000 through her sold-out concert series, Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things. All funds raised will be directed to grassroots organizations focused on enhancing the lives of trans youth.

Mission and Community Support

According to The Midwest Princess Project’s official website, its mission is to “uplift trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities through action, care, and connection.” As a sponsored project under the Catalyst Philanthropy Fund, the organization ensures that nearly all donations directly benefit community initiatives. Key beneficiaries of the funding include the Ali Forney Center and the LGBT Center in New York City, the Trans Wellness Center and TransLatin@ Coalition in Los Angeles, and the GLO Center and Center Project in Missouri.

Roan has emphasized that aside from minimal administrative costs, “every dollar possible” will reach those most in need. The LGBT Center in New York expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “We are so honoured to receive this wonderful gift from such an incredible member of our community.”

A History of Advocacy

The launch of The Midwest Princess Project is not Roan’s first foray into activism. Earlier this year, she initiated the ‘We Got You’ campaign, which included a donation of £25,000 to Backline, a non-profit that offers mental health support to professionals in the music industry. This act inspired other artists, such as Charli XCX and Noah Kahan, to contribute as well.

Reflecting on her journey as an artist and advocate, Roan shared during a recent performance, “It all made sense that it was to literally bring queer people joy and tell them that it’s OK.” Through The Midwest Princess Project, she continues to blend her pop stardom with a commitment to social justice, demonstrating that the realms of entertainment and activism can coexist harmoniously.

The initiative not only highlights Roan’s artistic achievements but also her dedication to fostering a supportive environment for marginalized communities. As The Midwest Princess Project develops, it sets a precedent for artists using their platforms to effect meaningful change in society, particularly for those who often go unheard.
