Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Márquez Embrace Parenting Chaos in New Podcast
Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Márquez have opened up about the realities of family life in their new podcast, Lost in Translation. The couple, who are parents to six-year-old Mia and two-year-old Thiago, emphasize that despite their public personas, they are navigating the same chaos that many families experience. Atkinson, a radio presenter based in Manchester, expressed that everyone is essentially “winging it” when it comes to parenting.
During a recent discussion, Atkinson noted, “I think it’s nice for people to know that every single family is having chaos. Regardless of your situation, your profession, we are all just winging it and hoping for the best.” This candid approach aims to resonate with listeners who may feel overwhelmed by parenting expectations.
Márquez, a professional dancer known for his role on Strictly Come Dancing, echoed Atkinson’s sentiments, highlighting the misconception that life in the spotlight is always glamorous. He remarked, “I think people think that because we work in the public eye that everything is glittery, but we are just very normal and chaotic.” The couple balances school runs, pet care, and daily routines, making their experiences relatable to many.
Encouraging Trust in Parenting Instincts
In a climate where social media often amplifies parental scrutiny, Márquez encourages new parents to trust their instincts. He stated, “There isn’t one rule book. Every situation is different, every family is different, every child is different.” This perspective aims to alleviate some pressures parents may feel as they navigate their unique journeys.
Atkinson shared her own insights, stating that motherhood has taught her not to focus on trivial matters. “The amount of times I’ve done a school run looking like I’ve just been dragged through a hedge… as long as my Mia looks lovely and she’s in clean clothes, I’m happy,” she said with a laugh. The couple recognizes that the dynamics between partners often shift after having children, but Atkinson reassures others that these changes can be positive.
“Just take your time with it all,” she advised. “It’s a massive, massive thing having a baby. It’s about appreciating what you’ve created and knowing that just because it’s not the same as it was, doesn’t mean it still can’t be brilliant.”
A Therapeutic Space for the Couple
Recording the podcast has provided Atkinson and Márquez with valuable quality time together. “It’s been really fun in terms of us getting to spend time together,” Atkinson explained. Amid their busy schedules, they appreciate the chance to share their daily experiences and frustrations.
Márquez added that prioritizing time without distractions is essential. “A lot of our work happens on our phones, but when we are together, especially with the kids, we do try to put them on silence,” he said. Their six-year-old daughter, Mia, has started to notice when her parents are preoccupied. “She says, ‘Let’s play, why are you on your phone?’”
Both parents emphasize the importance of being present during family time, regardless of the amount spent together. “It doesn’t matter how much time you spend with your partner or your kids, what matters is that when you are with them, you are present,” Márquez stated.
The couple also focuses on maintaining a healthy work-life balance, incorporating wellness practices into their daily routines. Atkinson described their home as “very zen,” highlighting their shared commitment to health and fitness. “We both want to thrive in terms of wellness,” she noted, mentioning their enjoyment of cooking healthy meals and engaging in outdoor activities.
Mornings for Atkinson involve rituals such as ice baths and enjoying coffee outdoors while feeding birds. “I think a lot of the time, people think to improve you have to speed up. However, I think it’s actually about slowing down, simplifying stuff,” she remarked.
The podcast Lost in Translation is available on all major podcast platforms, providing a relatable space for parents to connect and share their experiences. By discussing their own journey candidly, Atkinson and Márquez invite listeners to embrace the chaos of family life, reassuring them that they are not alone in their struggles.
