House of Guinness Captivates Viewers with Intriguing Drama
The historical drama House of Guinness has surged to the top of Netflix’s most-watched list, captivating audiences with its portrayal of the Guinness family’s legacy. Written by Steven Knight, the series features Jack Gleeson in the role of Byron Hedges, who plays a pivotal character in the narrative surrounding the Guinness siblings and their burgeoning beer empire.
Gleeson recently discussed his transformation for the role, revealing the complexities of Byron’s character. Set against a backdrop of social and political tensions, Byron is depicted as the son of a wealthy Protestant mother and a Catholic rebel. He forms a crucial connection with Edward Guinness, played by Louis Partridge, as he learns of Edward’s ambitions to expand the Guinness brand into the United States.
In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Gleeson elaborated on Byron’s unique position, stating, “Byron knows, through his connections, that the Fenian Brotherhood runs the ports – and if Guinness wants to be sold and imported, they’ll need the Irish Brotherhood on their side.” He added, “Byron is someone with a foot in both camps,” highlighting the character’s ability to navigate different social spheres to forge strategic alliances.
### A Narrative Tool for Expansion
While Byron Hedges plays a significant role in the series’ storyline, it is essential to note that he is a fictional creation. The character serves as a narrative device to explore the Guinness story across the Atlantic. Historically, the expansion of the Guinness brand into the U.S. began in 1817, with the first shipments arriving in South Carolina. However, it was under the leadership of Arthur and Edward Guinness that the brand truly flourished in the American market.
Despite the artistic liberties taken in the series, House of Guinness paints a vivid picture of the challenges and triumphs faced by the Guinness family. By blending historical fact with engaging storytelling, the show offers viewers a captivating glimpse into the world of one of the most recognized beer brands globally.
### Streaming and Viewing Options
As the series continues to gain popularity, viewers can access House of Guinness on Netflix. In an effort to promote the platform, Sky has introduced new Sky Stream TV bundles, which include a complimentary Netflix subscription with its £15 Essential TV plan. This package allows users to enjoy live and on-demand content, including the hit series, without the need for a satellite dish or aerial.
The combination of compelling storytelling and rich historical context in House of Guinness has resonated with audiences, ensuring its place as a standout series in Netflix’s lineup. As the show’s reach expands, so too does interest in the real story behind one of the world’s most famous brewing families.
