Hugh Wallace Remembered as Charismatic Architect at Funeral
Beloved television personality and architect Hugh Wallace was celebrated for his charisma and deep understanding of people during his funeral mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin on December 1, 2023. Wallace, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 68, was a prominent figure on RTÉ’s home design shows, including Home of the Year and The Great House Revival. Known for his wit and passion, he left a significant impact on both his audience and the design community.
The ceremony began with Wallace’s favorite song, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, as Reverend William Morton welcomed a large congregation. In his address, the Reverend expressed a desire to celebrate Wallace’s life alongside the sorrow of his passing. He emphasized that Wallace’s contributions extended beyond architecture; he had a remarkable ability to connect with people.
“Hugh Wallace shaped the spaces where people live,” Reverend Morton stated. “He understood buildings, but more importantly, he understood people—their hopes, dreams, and the fierce convictions they hold.” He highlighted how Wallace believed that a perfect home reflects the personalities of its inhabitants, reminding attendees that a house is more than just physical structure; it is a space filled with love.
Another touching tribute came from friend John Waters, who expressed his emotions while speaking at the altar. He opted to address the congregation as if Wallace were present, stating, “Hugh is going to tell you his story and I am going to be the mouthpiece for that story.” Waters reflected on the sudden nature of Wallace’s passing, admitting he had hoped for a more flamboyant exit marked by continued success.
Waters reminisced about the significant moments he shared with Wallace and his partner, Martin. He recalled, “A lot of fairy tales began at the George pub in Dublin. Martin and I were part of a fairy tale.” Their relationship spanned 37 years, during which they shared remarkable experiences both in the public eye and in their private lives. Waters emphasized the genuine love between the two, stating, “Martin loved me for me.”
The emotional service provided an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the joy and laughter Wallace brought into their lives. Waters urged those present to cherish their memories of Wallace and to extend kindness to Martin in the days ahead. “It’s important that when you think of those times, smile, don’t be sad,” he said.
Hugh Wallace’s legacy as a charismatic architect and television personality is one that will continue to resonate with many. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his profound understanding of what it means to create a home filled with love and connection.
