Irish Actor Mick Mellamphy Brings Award-Winning Play to Dublin Pub

Irish actor Mick Mellamphy is set to bring his latest production, The Smuggler, to a unique venue in Dublin. The play, which has already captivated audiences in New York City, will be staged at J R Mahon on Burgh Quay from July 28-30, 2023. This performance holds special significance, as it takes place in an actual pub, enhancing the intimate atmosphere for viewers.

Written by Rónán Noone, an acclaimed Irish playwright based in Boston, The Smuggler explores themes of survival and belonging through a gripping narrative. The production is helmed by Conor Bagley, a two-time Tony Award-winning producer, and produced by New York entrepreneur Jessica M DeLucia. Bagley, whose career began at the Abbey Theatre, has since directed numerous productions Off-Broadway and at regional theatres across the United States.

Set on a wealthy Massachusetts island in 2025, The Smuggler follows the journey of Irish immigrant Tim Finnegan, portrayed by Mellamphy. After a fatal crash ignites tensions between locals and migrant workers, Tim finds himself entangled in the island’s criminal underworld.

Mellamphy, known for his role as Sean MacGuire in the popular video game Red Dead Redemption 2, expressed his excitement about performing in Dublin. “It has been a dream of mine for a long time to bring this play home to my family, friends, and communities where I started out,” he said. “This is a play about an Irish immigrant facing the challenges of life in a different land. It resonates with so much of what we are talking about at this moment in time. To be able to perform this in my home is a very special opportunity.”

The play has already toured cities such as Cork, Belfast, and Kerry as part of its UK and Ireland circuit. Limited tickets for the Dublin performances are still available via Eventbrite, making it an opportunity not to be missed for theatre enthusiasts.
