The Barnstorm Theatre Company’s recent production of Sive by John B. Keane has received an enthusiastic response from audiences in Kilkenny. The performance, which took place at the Watergate Theatre at the end of November, captivated theatre-goers with its high-quality production values and compelling performances.

Under the direction of Philip Hardy, the cast delivered a range of performances that resonated deeply with the audience. The set, costumes, lighting, and music were praised for their contribution to bringing Keane’s world to life. Megan Kelly’s portrayal of the title character, Sive, was particularly noted for its sensitivity and depth.

Stellar Cast and Memorable Performances

Paula Drohan’s performance as Mena added a compelling complexity to the production, while Mags Whitely, a respected figure in the local theatre scene, provided a strong and memorable presence in the role of Nanna. Her performance grounded the drama, showcasing her talent and stage presence.

The ensemble cast was further enhanced by the contributions of John Prendergast, Eoin Nangle Ryan, and John Whitely, each of whom added significant depth to the production. A standout dynamic emerged from the performances of Jim Carroll and Ben Nunan, whose portrayal of the ‘tinker poets’ Pats Bocock and Carthalawn infused the play with charm and texture. Owen Finnegan also delivered an engaging portrayal of Sive’s young love, adding emotional urgency to the narrative.

Upcoming Productions and Future Projects

Following the success of Sive, Philip Hardy is set to direct another classic by John B. Keane, titled Big Maggie, which is scheduled for mid-February at the Thomastown Concert Hall. This production will reunite some of the talented individuals from Sive, with Mags Whitely taking on the commanding title role.

The upcoming play is being produced by Barn Owl Productions, the same group that previously staged The McGowan Trilogy by Seamus Scanlon last May in Thomastown. The community’s continued support for local theatre is evident, as audiences eagerly anticipate the next chapter in this vibrant artistic landscape.
