Local Artists Rally for ‘Gig for Gaza’ to Support UNICEF Efforts

A vibrant evening of music, poetry, and activism is set to unfold in Ballybofey on August 9, 2024, at the Balor Arts Centre. The event, titled ‘Gig for Gaza’, aims to raise crucial funds for UNICEF’s humanitarian efforts in Palestine. This concert highlights the urgent need for support, particularly as nearly half of Gaza’s population consists of children facing dire conditions.
Organized by local artist Conor Malone and the Balor Arts Centre, the event promises a diverse line-up of talent while ensuring that all proceeds directly benefit those affected in Gaza. Reports from organizations such as Amnesty International and the United Nations have classified the ongoing conflict as a genocide, highlighting the severity of the situation. Currently, over 470,000 individuals are at significant risk of famine, with many children suffering from malnutrition due to the prolonged crisis.
UNICEF continues to operate in Gaza despite numerous challenges. Between May 19 and June 4, the organization successfully delivered 26 trucks of life-saving aid, with an additional 1,000 trucks prepared to provide immediate assistance. All funds raised during the ‘Gig for Gaza’ will support ongoing efforts to combat the critical humanitarian situation.
Evening of Diverse Performances
The concert will feature a variety of performances, including live poetry by acclaimed Dublin writer Sarah Creighton Keogh. Known for her emotionally charged pieces, Keogh’s work explores themes of feminism, childhood, and self-expression. She views poetry as a means of reclaiming emotional authority, aiming to inspire audiences to confront their truths.
Also taking the stage is Ballybofey native Jason Deery, a singer-songwriter known for his innovative musical style. Deery plans to debut new material during the event, joined by fellow artists Jordan and Adam Hannigan, both members of the N15 music collective. The trio has developed a strong rapport, promising an engaging performance.
Local singer-songwriter Shauna Scanlon will also showcase her talents. After gaining attention with her debut single ‘Homebird’, Scanlon has enjoyed a successful start to her career, including radio airplay and a performance on The Six O’Clock Show. Her unique blend of soul, blues, and funk delivers a refreshing sound to the audience.
The evening will also present the rock duo Nine Foot Lizzards, consisting of Adam Ayers and Matthew Connolly. Having collaborated since their early teens, the duo aims to reintroduce rock music to younger audiences through their original compositions.
The headline act for the night, Final Girl, is a rising punk band that has generated buzz for their distinct sound. Formed in 2024, Final Girl comprises members Catherine Gallagher, Conor Duffy, Ciarán, and Seán Coleman. Known for their DIY ethos and captivating live performances, they are currently recording their debut EP.
Community Engagement and Support
The ‘Gig for Gaza’ has been curated by Siobhán Doyle and Daniel Browne, both well-known figures in the local arts community. Doyle, who has returned to Ballybofey after studying sustainability, is dedicated to promoting local talent. Browne has recently directed a successful production of Green Day’s *American Idiot*, contributing his creative expertise to the event.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased online or at the Balor Arts Centre’s box office on Main Street, Ballybofey. For those unable to attend but wishing to contribute, donations can be made via the iDonate page: [iDonate link](https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/gigforgazaballybofey).
The ‘Gig for Gaza’ represents not only a night of artistic expression but also a powerful statement of solidarity with the people of Gaza. As local artists unite for a common cause, they aim to bring attention to a critical humanitarian crisis while providing essential support to those in need.
