Michael Jackson Biopic Trailer Released, Mixed Reactions Emerge
The first trailer for the highly anticipated biopic, Michael, featuring the life of pop legend Michael Jackson, has been released, generating a wave of mixed reactions online. Set to hit theatres on April 24, 2026, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, the late artist’s nephew, portraying his iconic uncle. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for films like Training Day and The Equalizer, and written by John Logan of Gladiator fame, the project aims to showcase Jackson’s journey from a child star in the Jackson Five to a global music icon.
The release comes 17 years after Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009, which was ruled a homicide due to acute propofol intoxication. His physician, Conrad Murray, was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter related to Jackson’s passing. The film’s synopsis promises a portrayal of Jackson’s life that goes beyond the music, highlighting both his extraordinary talent and some of his most memorable performances.
The trailer has prompted enthusiastic responses, particularly praising Jaafar Jackson for his striking resemblance to his uncle. However, concerns have also emerged regarding the film’s potential to gloss over the more controversial aspects of Jackson’s life. Critics fear that the biopic may present a sanitized version of his legacy, failing to address the complexities surrounding his later years.
Dan Reed, director of the documentary Leaving Neverland, which explored allegations of sexual abuse against Jackson, has voiced strong criticism of the biopic. In a 2023 article for The Guardian, he stated that the film could “glorify a man who raped children,” emphasizing a lack of public outrage regarding its production. Reed remarked that the absence of protest signals Jackson’s enduring influence, even after his death.
As the trailer hints at a focus on Jackson’s celebrated career, speculation arises about whether the film will explore the controversies that plagued him later in life. Further complicating matters, there are indications that the biopic may be split into two parts. Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, mentioned the possibility during a recent earnings call, stating that the creative team is keen on delivering more content about Jackson soon after the initial release.
The production team hopes that Michael will achieve significant global success, similar to the hit biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed over $900 million worldwide. As audiences eagerly await the film, the conversation about Jackson’s legacy continues, reflecting both his immense talent and the controversies surrounding his life.
With the film set for release on April 24, 2026, viewers are left to ponder how the narrative will unfold and what aspects of Jackson’s complex life will be portrayed on screen.
