Moonlight Big Band Raises Funds in Memory of Martin Murray

The Moonlight Big Band is set to perform a fundraising concert on October 12, 2023, at the Clayton Hotel in Galway, in support of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI). The event, held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aims to honor the late Martin Murray, a beloved figure in Galway’s jazz community.
Martin Murray, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer in June 2023 at the age of just 34, was known for his remarkable musical talents. He had achieved the role of Musical Director for one of the largest cruise ships in the world, showcasing his skills on an international stage. Despite his illness, Murray organized a successful jazz night to express gratitude to Cancer Care West for their exceptional support during his treatment.
Continuing a Musical Legacy
Following his passing, friends and fellow musicians established the Martin Murray Foundation to honor his legacy. The foundation aims to provide resources for individuals facing cancer diagnoses in the West of Ireland and to support emerging musical talent in Galway. It seeks to foster a sense of community among musicians, encouraging them to learn and collaborate.
The upcoming concert will feature a full 19-piece big band, performing classic hits from renowned artists such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman. All musicians and singers are volunteering their time and talent, ensuring that every euro raised goes towards advancing breast cancer research.
Details of the Event
Tickets for the concert are priced at €25, with all proceeds benefiting the NBCRI, based at the Lambe Institute at the University of Galway. Doors will open at 19:00, with the music commencing at 19:30. Tickets can be purchased exclusively online at www.SwingInPink.ie.
At the launch of the Martin Murray Foundation, Professor Michael Kerin, Director of Research at the NBCRI, expressed his support for the initiative and the importance of community engagement in cancer research funding. Murray’s commitment to music and community service continues to inspire those who knew him and those who benefit from the foundation’s efforts.
The Moonlight Big Band’s concert promises to be a night of exceptional music while contributing to an important cause, reflecting Martin Murray’s enduring spirit and dedication to both his craft and his community.
