Park Hotel Transforms into Art Destination in Kenmare, Ireland
The historic Park Hotel in Kenmare, Co Kerry, has undergone a significant transformation, emerging as a vibrant cultural hub thanks to its new owners, Bryan and Tara Meehan. Since acquiring the hotel from Francis and John Brennan in 2023, the Meehans have infused the luxurious five-star property with an extensive collection of Irish and international art, leading locals to affectionately nickname it “the Tate Kenmare.”
Originally built in 1897, the Park Hotel has preserved its elegant rooms and manicured gardens while embracing a modern aesthetic. The Meehans have replaced traditional gilt-framed landscapes and heavy mirrors with striking contemporary works. Guests can now admire pieces by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Dorothy Cross, and Theaster Gates throughout the hotel—from the entrance lobby and corridors to the bedrooms.
Art Collection Enhances Hotel Experience
The hotel’s dining experience has also been reimagined with the introduction of the Landline restaurant, named after a series by artist Sean Scully. Guests are treated to a visually stimulating environment, highlighted by an impressive tapestry by Annie Morris positioned above the fireplace. Notably, the staircase features works by Theaster Gates, who has creatively transformed canvas fire hoses used during the 1963 civil rights protests in Birmingham, Alabama, into powerful art pieces.
One of the hotel’s most compelling attractions is a temporary exhibition in the library, showcasing the work of French photojournalist Gilles Caron. This exhibition, which runs until December, features poignant images from the Battle of the Bogside in Derry, published in Life magazine. The collection reflects the Meehans’ commitment to blending art with history, providing guests with a deeper understanding of the cultural landscape.
A Lifelong Passion for Art
Bryan Meehan, who is also the founder of Blue Bottle Coffee, has nurtured his passion for art throughout his life. Growing up in Dublin, he recalls how his parents opted to invest in art rather than traditional savings. “Rather than put it in the bank or under the mattress, they’d buy a painting. One of my first memories is from 1977, of them coming home with a set of Maurice MacGonigal watercolours,” he shared.
The Park Kenmare collection is open not only to hotel guests but also to the general public, complete with regular art tours. This initiative aims to engage the local community and art enthusiasts, making the hotel a destination for cultural exploration.
The transformation of the Park Hotel into a contemporary art space highlights the Meehans’ vision of creating a unique experience that combines luxury hospitality with a vibrant art scene. As the hotel continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the power of art in enhancing the guest experience and enriching the cultural fabric of Kenmare.
