Pat Kenny Predicts Kieran Cuddihy as Future Host of The Late Late Show
In a surprising turn of events, veteran broadcaster Pat Kenny has suggested that Kieran Cuddihy‘s recent move to RTÉ radio could be a strategic step towards becoming the next host of The Late Late Show. Having previously hosted the flagship programme for ten years, Kenny believes Cuddihy’s experience on both television and radio positions him well for this role.
Cuddihy, who transitioned from a long-standing position at Newstalk and a brief stint on the Tonight programme on Virgin Media, has created a buzz in the broadcasting community with his unexpected career shift. Kenny remarked, “I would imagine that’s part of the reason why he probably left. He has got television under his belt now.” According to Kenny, Cuddihy’s aspirations likely include hosting the renowned late-night show, making his recent career moves a strategic play.
Patrick Kielty, the current host of The Late Late Show, is in his second season and has a contract that extends for another year. The future remains uncertain, as RTÉ could choose to renew Kielty’s contract or consider Cuddihy for the position. Industry insiders also mention Oliver Callan as another contender, known for his versatility in comedy and current affairs.
Kenny, who has observed the shifting landscape at RTÉ closely, noted the recent departures and changes within the network. Notable exits include Claire Byrne moving to Newstalk and Ray D’Arcy being removed from his long-running afternoon show. These adjustments, driven by new Head of Audio Patricia Monahan, have sparked discussions about the future direction of the station.
Reflecting on the evolving radio landscape, Kenny stated, “I see more and more of my colleagues in Newstalk leaving for RTÉ. Don’t forget it’s coming the other way too.” He emphasized the importance of movement within the industry, suggesting it could signify a new era for broadcasting professionals.
Despite his long history with RTÉ, Kenny ruled out the possibility of returning for a regular show, expressing contentment with his current role at Newstalk. He will now present only on weekends, relinquishing his weekday morning slot to Claire Byrne. He commented, “Everything you have on your agenda expands to fill the time available, that’s the truth of it.”
The recent changes at RTÉ have left many presenters feeling uncertain about their job security. Kenny acknowledged the pressures faced by broadcasters, noting, “Every presenter is only as good as the last show. You’re at the mercy of ratings.” He expressed understanding for Ray D’Arcy, who reportedly felt blindsided by his sudden exit, although he mentioned the public nature of D’Arcy’s situation.
As RTÉ navigates these significant transitions, the future of The Late Late Show remains a focal point for both audiences and industry professionals alike. With Cuddihy’s fresh perspective and Kenny’s insights, the next chapter in Irish broadcasting appears to be unfolding, inviting speculation and excitement about who will ultimately take the helm of this iconic program.
