Rosie O’Donnell Considered for Irish Presidential Run in 2024
The possibility of comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell entering the race for the Irish presidency has gained attention as bookmakers weigh her chances. Currently living in Ireland with her child, Clay, since January, O’Donnell has been reportedly exploring her eligibility for the presidency by seeking Irish citizenship through descent.
Bookmaker Ladbrokes has placed O’Donnell’s odds at 10/1 for a potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for November 2024. This speculation follows her well-documented public feud with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was re-elected for a second term earlier this year.
Irish Citizenship and Public Sentiment
O’Donnell’s affection for Ireland has resonated with many, contributing to her growing support among Irish citizens. According to Ladbrokes spokesperson Cal Gildart, “Rosie O’Donnell has really captured the hearts and minds of the Irish people.” Gildart added that her “endearing charm” has led punters to back her as a potential presidential candidate.
In a recent appearance on Ireland AM, O’Donnell expressed her sense of safety in her new environment. She remarked, “It’s so much safer,” highlighting a significant cultural shift compared to her life in the United States. O’Donnell noted that Clay can now walk with friends in their neighborhood, a stark contrast to her initial concerns about their safety.
Current Presidential Landscape
As of now, O’Donnell is among a limited pool of candidates, with only Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness officially declaring their intentions to run for the presidency. This leaves the door open for O’Donnell, particularly as she navigates her citizenship status and the growing enthusiasm for her potential candidacy.
With the election drawing closer, the political landscape in Ireland may shift, and O’Donnell’s name could well find its way onto the ballot. As she continues to engage with the Irish public, her journey towards a possible presidential bid will be closely watched by both supporters and skeptics alike.
