Tommy Tiernan to Star in Musical Theatre Debut in 2026
Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan is set to make his musical theatre debut in 2026 with a new production titled The House Must Win. This musical, written by renowned Irish singer-songwriter Mick Flannery, will feature Tiernan alongside Belfast actor Tabitha Smyth, who will portray Ray’s daughter, Grace. The announcement marks an exciting development for the 56-year-old comedian as he steps into the world of musical theatre.
The production is based on Flannery’s debut album, Evening Train, released in 2005. It promises to deliver a gritty narrative that immerses audiences in the emotional depths of its story and music. Set on the western edge of Ireland during the 1970s, the musical follows two brothers navigating a life filled with challenges. Promotional material describes their journey as a struggle to achieve a “good” life while honoring the woman they both love.
The plot unfolds in a town characterized by backroom poker games, secrets, and broken families. It highlights the characters’ need to learn how to play the cards they’ve been dealt, ultimately revealing the meaning behind the phrase “when the house must win.” Flannery has characterized Tiernan’s role, Ray, as a man “heartbroken, mostly by his own hand,” adding depth to the character’s struggles.
In a statement, Flannery expressed his excitement about having Tiernan and Smyth involved, stating it is a “great honour” to collaborate with such talented actors. The musical has already been showcased as a work-in-progress at the Galway International Arts Festival, where it received positive feedback from attendees.
Upcoming Performances and Venues
The world premiere of The House Must Win is scheduled for April 17, 2026, at Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire. The production will run for three weeks, concluding on May 3, 2026. Following its debut, the musical will transfer to The Everyman in Cork, Flannery’s hometown, for a ten-night engagement from May 6 to May 16, 2026.
Tickets for this highly anticipated production are available now, offering fans the chance to witness Tiernan’s transition from comedy to musical theatre. As audiences eagerly await the premiere, the collaboration between Tiernan and Flannery is expected to create an unforgettable experience that blends humor, drama, and compelling storytelling.
