Tributes Flow for Stone Roses’ Bassist Mani Following His Death
Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the celebrated bassist of the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has passed away at the age of 63. His brother confirmed the news via social media on November 20, 2025, just days after Mani announced an intimate UK tour for 2026/27. The music world is mourning the loss of a talent known for his unique style and infectious charisma.
A Musical Legacy
Mani was a pivotal figure in the music scene, having joined the Stone Roses at the age of 16. He contributed to both of the band’s iconic albums, which were instrumental in defining the ‘Madchester’ movement of the early 1990s. The Stone Roses, led by frontman Ian Brown, gained critical acclaim for their distinctive sound before disbanding in 1996 following internal tensions.
Following his time with the Stone Roses, Mani joined Primal Scream, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most talented bassists of his generation. In a heartfelt tribute, Primal Scream’s bassist Simone Butler expressed her shock on Instagram, stating, “The moment you met Mani, you loved him. The most brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart and generosity.”
Industry Reactions and Personal Tributes
In the wake of his passing, numerous tributes have poured in from fellow musicians and fans alike. Liam Gallagher referred to Mani as his “hero” and expressed his devastation over the loss. “In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani,” Gallagher tweeted.
Richard Ashcroft also shared his condolences, describing Mani as “one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time with.” He credited Mani for inspiring him in his own music career, noting his “style, swagger, and sound” alongside his “warm heart.”
Manchester United, the football club Mani supported, acknowledged his impact on the city’s music scene, stating, “Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield.” His connection to Manchester was profound, as he was born there, with family roots tracing back to Athy, County Kildare, Ireland. In 2019, he received recognition with a Made of Athy plaque.
Mani’s personal life was marked by loss as well; his wife, Imelda, passed away from cancer in November 2023. Together, they had two sons, who are now facing the loss of their father.
As tributes continue to emerge, Mani leaves behind a rich legacy in music, celebrated not just for his contributions to iconic bands but also for his warm spirit that touched many. His influence will endure in the hearts of fans and musicians around the world.
