Veteran Broadcaster Reflects on the Impending Closure of 2XM
The impending closure of RTÉ 2XM, a digital-only radio station, has prompted reflections from veteran broadcaster and sports journalist John Kenny. After 18 years on air, the station is set to cease operations on December 31, 2025, alongside three other RTÉ digital stations, RTÉ Pulse, RTÉ Radio 1 Extra, and RTÉ Jr Radio. The shutdown, originally announced in 2019 as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy, was officially confirmed this week, marking the end of an era for many listeners.
Kenny, who has hosted the acclaimed show The JK Experience since 2007, expressed his sadness over the closure, stating, “It’s been part of my life for the last 18 years. I’m sad to see it go.” He reminisced about the station’s role in promoting new Irish music and providing a platform for emerging artists, a sentiment echoed by many in the industry.
A Legacy of Supporting Independent Artists
Throughout its history, 2XM has carved out a niche as a vital outlet for independent artists in Ireland. Kenny highlighted the significance of the station, saying, “I think we gave people an opportunity.” Many Irish bands viewed the platform as a means to reach audiences, with Kenny often receiving requests to play new singles. “When you do, they’re delighted,” he noted, underscoring the station’s impact on the music scene.
The station also played an essential role during the Covid-19 pandemic. Kenny recalled receiving messages from listeners who found solace in the programming during tough times. “Being able to keep making radio for 2XM every week… it kept me sane,” he explained, emphasizing the personal connection he developed with his audience.
Alongside 2XM, the closures of RTÉ Pulse, Radio 1 Extra, and RTÉ Jr Radio are part of RTÉ’s efforts to streamline its audio output. These stations had transitioned to primarily online and Saorview platforms following the end of RTÉ’s Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) network in 2021. Kenny remarked on the station’s underappreciation, stating, “It just wasn’t on the radar,” while noting the quality programming that had emerged from 2XM.
The Uncertain Future of Alternative Music Programming
Looking ahead, RTÉ has indicated that some specialist content may migrate to 2FM, but Kenny expressed doubt about any of 2XM’s material making the transition. “It doesn’t appear so,” he said, pointing out that the station is moving in a different direction.
Many presenters who have contributed to 2XM shared their dismay over the closure. Dudley Colley, a weekly presenter on the station, remarked on social media that the station had “eked out its notice as long as possible.” He encouraged support for local radio, emphasizing the importance of preserving such platforms, which have become increasingly rare.
Beta Da Silva, an established host on RTÉ Pulse, also expressed sadness, recalling his early days in radio at the station. “It was such a pivotal part of my journey just starting out in radio fresh from leaving college,” he stated. The collective sentiment among presenters and listeners underscores the station’s role as a training ground for new talent and a vital space for alternative music.
Kenny, while acknowledging the sense of loss, remained realistic about the industry. “In our business, nothing lasts forever. Life goes on,” he reflected. Despite the closure, he is open to new opportunities in radio, recognizing the unique place 2XM held in the hearts of its listeners. “We played the music that didn’t always have a home,” he concluded, affirming that the station’s legacy will endure for those who tuned in over the years.
The closure of RTÉ 2XM serves as a poignant reminder of the changing landscape of media and the importance of supporting local and independent platforms. As the station prepares for its final broadcast, the impact it has made will be remembered by its devoted audience.
