Alcohol Dominates Addiction Statistics in Ireland’s Mid West

Alcohol remains the predominant substance of addiction in the Mid West of Ireland, according to mid-year statistics from the Coolmine Therapeutic Community for 2025. The data reveals that alcohol accounts for 40 percent of all treatment presentations, followed closely by cocaine at 31 percent. This trend underscores the ongoing challenges faced by individuals seeking help for substance use in the region.
The report indicates a steady demand for services at Coolmine’s residential centres in Limerick and Dublin, which have maintained full occupancy. This marks a slight increase in alcohol-related cases from 37 percent in the same period last year. Other substances, such as heroin (8 percent), cannabis (11 percent), and benzodiazepines (9 percent), also show significant levels of concern among clients.
Insights into Regional Substance Use Trends
Regional variations are evident in the data. While alcohol is the leading substance in the Mid and South West, cocaine emerges as the primary substance in the East, where it accounts for 36 percent of cases. Pauline McKeown, CEO of Coolmine, remarked, “This report provides an important insight into the ongoing addiction challenges across the country.” She emphasized the persistent need for support, particularly among women and families.
In the first half of 2025, a total of 1,969 clients accessed treatment and support through Coolmine, nearly matching the record demand seen in 2024. This consistent demand suggests that high service levels have become the norm for addiction treatment in Ireland. The demographic data shows that 57 percent of clients were male, while 43 percent were female, indicating a notable increase in female engagement compared to the previous year.
Impact on Families and Children
The report highlights the impact of substance use on families, particularly through Coolmine’s residential service for mothers and children at Ashleigh House, which currently accommodates 35 children. A total of 1,794 children were directly affected by parental substance use and received support, illustrating the broader social implications of addiction.
Ms. McKeown further noted that “the sustained pressure on our residential and outreach services shows the scale of need we are responding to every day.” This reflects a growing trend of individuals from diverse backgrounds reaching out for assistance, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems.
