Autumn Hair Loss: Expert Tips to Combat Seasonal Shedding

As autumn sets in, many individuals experience an increase in hair loss, a phenomenon often attributed to seasonal shedding. Research indicates that fluctuations in temperature, humidity, and sun exposure can lead to more hair falling from the scalp than usual. With searches for “seasonal hair loss” soaring by 393% in the past month, this issue appears to resonate with a growing number of people, particularly as November approaches, a peak month for concerns about hair thinning.
To understand the underlying causes of this seasonal trend, Lloyds Pharmacy Online Doctor partnered with Samantha Stewart, a consultant trichologist at The Spencer Clinic. Stewart explains how the colder months can adversely affect hair health. The combination of cold, dry air and indoor heating can leave hair brittle and prone to breakage. She notes, “Cold air is typically low in humidity, and this lack of moisture can lead to dry hair.” This dryness can result in split ends and increased fragility, making hair more susceptible to damage.
The reduction in daylight during autumn and winter also impacts hair health. With less exposure to sunlight, many individuals may experience lower levels of vitamin D, a nutrient essential for hair growth. Stewart emphasizes that while not everyone will notice an increase in hair loss during these months, the degree of shedding can vary significantly from person to person.
Clothing Choices and Their Impact
The clothing we wear in winter can further influence hair health. Stewart points out that while hats and scarves provide protection from harsh weather conditions, certain styles and materials can cause friction against hair. “Hats that are too tight or rough in texture can lead to tangling and breakage,” she explains. Moreover, materials that generate static electricity can exacerbate hair frizz, especially in dry conditions.
Extended wear of hats can also create a humid environment that may lead to scalp issues, such as dandruff, for individuals prone to such conditions. Stewart advises opting for hats with looser fits and softer linings, such as silk or satin, to reduce friction and moisture buildup.
Effective Strategies to Minimise Hair Loss
To mitigate the effects of seasonal shedding, Stewart recommends several proactive measures. These include:
– Ensuring that hat rims are not too tight and are made from hair-friendly materials.
– Keeping hats and scarves clean to prevent the accumulation of oils and bacteria that can lead to scalp problems.
– Utilizing hydrating hair products to lock in moisture and counteract dryness.
– Minimising the use of heat styling tools, which can worsen dryness; if necessary, using a heat protectant spray.
– Staying well-hydrated by drinking sufficient water, as hydration is crucial for maintaining healthy hair.
– Following a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, including biotin, vitamin D, zinc, B vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to support hair health.
– Scheduling regular trims to prevent split ends and maintain hair vitality.
– Avoiding tight hairstyles, such as ponytails or braids, that can stress hair and scalp, particularly in colder weather.
By implementing these strategies, individuals can better protect their hair during the autumn and winter months. With the right care and attention, it is possible to maintain healthy, vibrant hair despite the seasonal challenges.
