Blackrock Health Launches Campaign for Early Heart Health Awareness

Recent data from Blackrock Health indicates a concerning trend in heart health, revealing that the average age of patients seeking treatment at its Rapid Cardiac Care service is just 63 years old. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency for individuals, particularly in midlife, to prioritize their cardiovascular health. With cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the leading cause of death globally, Blackrock Health has launched the “63-Year-Old Reality Check” campaign to encourage proactive health measures and raise awareness about heart health.
Every year, nearly 9,000 people in Ireland succumb to cardiovascular disease, emphasizing that many cases are preventable. The campaign aims to dispel the misconception that heart issues predominantly affect older adults. According to Dr Daniel O’Hare, a Consultant Cardiologist at Blackrock Health, there is an increasing number of patients in their 40s and 50s presenting with risk factors related to heart disease. He asserts, “Stress, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and a sedentary lifestyle can all have serious consequences if left unaddressed. Recognising the signs early and taking proactive steps can save lives.”
Understanding Cardiovascular Conditions
Dr O’Hare explains that the most common reasons for patients to seek care include chest pain, arrhythmias, and heart failure. These conditions are often linked to lifestyle factors such as inactivity, smoking, obesity, and family history. Additionally, many cardiovascular problems develop silently, particularly due to atherosclerosis—the gradual buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries.
As individuals enter their 40s, the impacts of lifestyle choices often become more pronounced. For those who are inactive or have poor dietary habits, this can lead to elevated blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and even diabetes. Dr O’Hare notes the added stress that many people face during this stage of life, which can mask underlying cardiac issues. “It’s a stage of life when paying closer attention to your heart becomes essential,” he emphasizes.
Recognizing Symptoms and the Importance of Early Detection
Some symptoms should never be ignored, regardless of age. Dr O’Hare points out that many individuals mistakenly believe it is normal to feel breathless during everyday activities. “Chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, and unusual fatigue should never be dismissed as signs of ageing. These symptoms may signal an underlying heart problem and warrant immediate medical attention,” he advises.
The significance of early diagnosis cannot be overstated. Dr O’Hare stresses that identifying heart issues before a major event, such as a heart attack, can dramatically alter a patient’s prognosis. “Early detection allows us to intervene with medication and support lifestyle changes that can mitigate risks or manage the condition,” he explains.
For those concerned about their heart health, regular check-ups should begin at age 40. This screening is particularly crucial for individuals with additional risk factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, or a family history of heart disease. Dr O’Hare advocates for establishing a routine with healthcare providers to monitor heart health effectively.
Changing lifestyle habits is beneficial at any age. Dr O’Hare reassures, “It is always the right time to introduce regular physical activity, adopt a balanced diet, stop smoking, and reduce or eliminate alcohol. The benefits extend beyond test results, with many reporting improved energy, better sleep, and an overall sense of wellbeing.”
For individuals experiencing concerning symptoms, it is vital to seek help promptly. “If you notice chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat, do not ignore these warning signs. The earlier you are assessed, the better the outcomes,” Dr O’Hare advises.
The Blackrock Health Rapid Cardiac Care service allows quick access to specialist cardiology teams at clinics in Blackrock, Galway, and Hermitage, with or without a GP referral. This ensures that patients can undergo essential tests and begin appropriate treatment without delay.

In summary, the “63-Year-Old Reality Check” campaign by Blackrock Health serves as a crucial reminder that heart health issues can arise earlier than expected. By fostering awareness and encouraging early action, the campaign aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and resources needed to safeguard their cardiovascular wellbeing.
