Broadcaster Tom Dunne Reveals Heart Health Scare and Triumphs

Tom Dunne, a prominent broadcaster with Newstalk, shared a life-altering revelation about his heart health. In a candid discussion on the show “Keys To My Life,” Dunne disclosed that he was informed in 2017 he faced a 70% chance of dying within two years due to a critical heart condition. The shocking news stemmed from a routine check-up that uncovered a malformed heart valve, putting his life in jeopardy.
During the episode, Dunne recounted the day he received the daunting diagnosis. “I got a phone call to go in and see the surgeon. It was quite heavy,” he explained. The surgeon informed him, “You have a 70% chance of dying within the next two years.” This valve, he noted, could simply fail to open without any prior warning.
Reflecting on his situation, Dunne expressed profound gratitude for the timing of his diagnosis. “If I was born 20, 30 years earlier, it just wouldn’t have happened,” he remarked, emphasizing the miraculous nature of modern medical advancements that allowed for timely intervention.
Personal Struggles and Family Joys
In addition to discussing his health scare, Dunne opened up about the challenges he and his wife, Audrey, faced while trying to start a family. The couple is now proud parents to two daughters, Eva and Skye. He described the journey to parenthood as a “torturous path,” revealing that they often questioned whether they would ever become parents.
“Numerous times we wondered, is this ever going to happen?” Dunne said, expressing the emotional toll their struggles had on them. The couple ultimately persevered, leading to what he described as “the greatest day ever” when they learned they were expecting.
Dunne’s experiences have reshaped his perspective on life. The broadcaster reflected on the importance of cherishing small moments, particularly after his health crisis. “I think I knew what was important going in [to heart surgery],” he said. “I love my life, I really do, and I didn’t want to change things afterwards— I just wanted more of it.”
Holding his daughter Skye’s hand during this tumultuous time underscored for him the value of life’s precious moments. “That is worth its weight in gold,” he stated with heartfelt sincerity.
Legacy of Resilience
Dunne’s story resonates with many, highlighting the unpredictable nature of life and the resilience required to face health challenges. His openness about both his heart condition and family struggles serves as an inspiration for others who may be navigating similar paths.
