Castlefinn Woman Embraces Positivity During Cancer Treatment

A woman from Castlefinn, aged 50, is focusing on the positives as she navigates her treatment for breast cancer. Helen McKinney Russell was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer in May after discovering a lump in her left breast. A referral from her general practitioner led her to the Breast Clinic North West, where tests confirmed her diagnosis.
The emotional moment of learning about her cancer diagnosis is etched in Helen’s memory. She recalled, “I felt very emotional when they said it might be cancer when I went for tests. Two weeks later, in May, I went back for my results, and the consultant said it was cancer.” During the consultation, Helen reached for her husband Stephen Russell‘s hand for support, while her sister, who works at the hospital, was visibly affected.
Currently, Helen is undergoing chemotherapy, with the treatment expected to conclude in November. Following chemotherapy, she is scheduled for a left breast mastectomy and a right breast lumpectomy in February, after which she will begin radiotherapy.
Support from her family plays a crucial role in Helen’s approach to her treatment. She shares, “I find that a positive mindset really helps. I make sure to put aside time every day to reflect on the things that I’m grateful for. Trying to find the positive in each day really helps me.”
Raising Awareness for Breast Cancer Support
Helen is not only focused on her own journey; she is also advocating for the Big Pink Breakfast campaign, which aims to support individuals affected by breast cancer. She encourages the public to contribute, stating, “A huge amount of the funding for the Irish Cancer Society’s breast cancer support services and breast cancer research projects comes from donations made by the public. If you are at all able, please support this important cause. You can sign up at cancer.ie/pink.”
In a show of solidarity, Helen’s sister, poet Priscilla Kee, is launching a new book on October 9, 2023, with proceeds going towards breast cancer patients. This initiative highlights the collective effort within families to combat the disease.
Importance of Early Detection
Mary O’Kelly, a Cancer Nurse with the Irish Cancer Society, emphasizes the critical nature of self-examination for women of all ages. “Self-examination is so important for women, even those who are eligible for screening, as this only takes place every two years,” she explained. O’Kelly advises women to select a consistent date each month for self-examinations, urging them to be aware of what is normal for their bodies.
“If you notice any signs or symptoms of breast cancer that persist, it is essential to see your GP as soon as possible,” she added. O’Kelly reassures that attending a GP for breast issues is crucial, as early detection can save lives.
For individuals seeking support or more information about breast cancer, the Irish Cancer Society offers a free support line at 1800 200 700 and additional resources at www.cancer.ie.
This October, the Irish Cancer Society is encouraging communities to host their own Big Pink Breakfast events to raise vital funds for breast cancer support services. Initiatives funded include free counselling, transport to treatment, and night nursing, alongside contributions to innovative breast cancer research projects.
