Dentist Exposes Common Habits That Damage Your Teeth Daily
Many daily habits may unknowingly jeopardize your dental health, according to cosmetic dentist Dr. Raj Juneja, founder of Face Teeth Smile. While most individuals concentrate on brushing and flossing, it is often seemingly innocent behaviours that lead to significant dental problems. Dr. Juneja highlights the most common hidden habits that can harm your teeth and offers practical strategies for long-term oral health.
One of the most damaging practices is **constant snacking**. This behaviour allows bacteria in the mouth to produce acids that erode tooth enamel, particularly when consuming sugary or starchy foods. Continuous grazing prevents teeth from recovering, increasing the risk of decay and cavities. To protect your smile, Dr. Juneja recommends limiting snacks between meals and opting for tooth-friendly options like cheese, nuts, or crunchy vegetables, which help neutralise acids. Rinsing your mouth with water after eating and waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing can also safeguard softened enamel.
Mouth breathing is another habit that can severely affect oral health. It dries out saliva, your mouth’s natural defence against bacteria and acid, raising the risk of bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Long-term mouth breathing can negatively impact jaw development and alignment, especially in children. If you find yourself regularly breathing through your mouth, particularly at night, it may be due to nasal congestion, allergies, or a habitual response. Treating any underlying nasal issues and practising nasal breathing techniques can help restore balance and protect your dental health.
Another surprising dental risk comes from **chewing ice**. While it may feel refreshing, this habit can cause cracks or chips in enamel, weakening tooth structure over time. It can also irritate gums and damage fillings or crowns. Frequent cravings for ice may indicate an iron deficiency, a condition known as pica, and should be discussed with a general practitioner. To reduce the urge, consider drinking chilled water or ice-free cold beverages instead.
Brushing teeth too soon after consuming acidic foods or drinks—like citrus, coffee, or wine—can also lead to enamel erosion. The acid temporarily weakens the tooth’s surface, and immediate brushing can exacerbate the damage. Dr. Juneja suggests waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing to allow saliva to neutralise acids and naturally remineralise enamel. During this time, rinsing your mouth with water or chewing sugar-free gum can help rebalance pH levels.
Intense or prolonged exercise can further complicate oral health by reducing saliva flow and increasing mouth dryness, particularly when breathing heavily through the mouth. This creates an environment conducive to acid and bacterial growth. Many sports drinks contain high levels of sugar and acid, which can erode enamel over time. To protect your teeth, stay hydrated with water, avoid sugary sports drinks, and rinse your mouth after workouts. If you tend to clench your jaw during exercise, consider wearing a mouthguard to prevent wear and tear.
Several less obvious habits can also harm teeth, such as nail biting, using teeth to open packaging, or grinding teeth, especially under stress. Constantly sipping on coffee, fizzy drinks, or fruit juices maintains an acidic environment in the mouth. Additionally, brushing too aggressively can lead to gum recession and enamel erosion.
Awareness of these habits is crucial. Identifying and modifying your behaviours, such as using a straw for acidic beverages or scheduling regular dental check-ups, can help spot early signs of wear or damage. By implementing these simple changes, individuals can significantly enhance their long-term oral health, ensuring a brighter smile for years to come.
