Donegal Councillors Press HSE on Surgical Hub Progress at LUH

Councillors in Donegal have expressed concerns regarding the progress of the anticipated surgical hub at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH). During a recent meeting of the Regional Health Forum, members sought clarification from the Health Service Executive (HSE) on the steps being taken to bring the hub to fruition.

Questions arose particularly after the HSE’s initial response primarily addressed the proposed Ambulatory Care Hub and outlined plans for a Development Control Plan for the hospital campus. Three local representatives—Councillor Gerry McMonagle, Councillor Ciaran Brogan, and Councillor Declan Meehan—sought further details on the surgical hub’s status, emphasizing the need for more transparency.

According to the HSE, a Capital Programme Oversight Board has been established at LUH to oversee the Development Control Plan. This plan is designed to coordinate all hospital services effectively. The HSE also confirmed that a design team will be appointed in early 2026 to develop preliminary options for the Ambulatory Care Hub, which aims to enhance surgical and oncology facilities in the long run.

During the meeting, Tony Canavan, the Regional Executive Officer, reassured attendees that the proposal is advancing well under the National Programme. He highlighted the importance of the Development Control Plan, stating that it will play a crucial role in reducing wait times for oncology patients and improving overall cancer services at the hospital.

The councillors, while acknowledging the HSE’s efforts, reiterated their desire for more comprehensive information regarding the timeline and specific features of the surgical hub. The discussions reflect ongoing public interest in the development of healthcare services in the region, particularly as communities seek improvements in medical facilities and patient care.

As the process continues, local representatives remain vigilant, advocating for timely updates and effective communication from health authorities to ensure that the proposed facilities meet the needs of the Donegal community.
