Donegal Parents Urged to Schedule RSV Vaccinations for Infants

Parents and guardians in Donegal are being urged to schedule immunisations against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for their infants ahead of the impending winter season. This advisory follows concerns about a potential surge in RSV infections as colder months approach, which typically lead to an increase in respiratory illnesses among children.
RSV is a prevalent virus that can cause severe respiratory infections, particularly among young infants and vulnerable populations. Each winter, RSV results in numerous hospitalisations, some of which involve serious complications. According to the Health Service Executive (HSE), parents are advised to act now to ensure their newborns receive the necessary vaccinations before the onset of winter illnesses.
Dr. Hilary Stokes, a Consultant Paediatrician in the Donegal region, highlights that immunisation is crucial for infants born between September 1, 2025, and February 29, 2026. These infants will be offered the immunisation before they leave the maternity hospital, reinforcing the importance of early intervention in protecting their health.
The HSE has made information regarding local clinics and vaccination schedules accessible on its website, making it easier for parents to find relevant details. By taking proactive measures now, families can contribute to reducing the risk of RSV infections in their young children, ensuring a healthier winter season for all.
As RSV continues to pose a threat during winter months, timely vaccinations are essential for safeguarding the health of Donegal’s youngest residents. Parents are encouraged to prioritize this immunisation as part of their child’s healthcare routine to prevent potential complications from RSV infections.
