Donegal Woman Urges Early Action After Overcoming Cancer
A Donegal woman is encouraging proactive health measures following her battle with breast cancer. Lynette Barnett, a mother of four from Raphoe, received her diagnosis in spring 2024 and completed her treatment within six months at Letterkenny University Hospital.
In February 2024, Lynette noticed a lump and consulted her general practitioner. Within ten days, she underwent a series of tests at the Breast Care Unit, including a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsies. A week later, she faced the devastating news: she had breast cancer. “I thought my world was going to end,” Lynette recalled. “But I put all my trust in my consultant, Mr. Michael Sugrue, who certainly looked after me.”
Over the next several months, Lynette underwent an intensive treatment plan that included 16 rounds of chemotherapy, 15 rounds of radiation, and a mastectomy. By November 2024, her treatment was successfully completed.
Lynette acknowledges her gratitude for the Breast Centre North West, where expert care was readily available. “I can’t thank my breast care nurses, Geraldine and Nicola, enough for looking after me,” she expressed. Their support has been crucial in her recovery, as she continues with regular check-ups.
Her experience has profoundly impacted her views on health and self-awareness. Lynette emphasizes the importance of self-checking and acting swiftly when something feels amiss. “It put awareness big time into my family and friends. Nobody checks themselves as much now as I do,” she noted, indicating a shift in how those close to her perceive their health.
Lynette also emphasizes the growing incidence of breast cancer among women of all ages. “Since my diagnosis, I’ve been talking to a shocking number of people who had it and I didn’t know,” she said. She advocates for earlier screening, suggesting that mammograms should be available to women starting at age 30 rather than the current standard of 50.
Sharing her story is part of Lynette’s mission to raise awareness about breast health. “It is so important to be breast aware at any age and to trust your instincts when something doesn’t feel right,” she stated.
In recognition of her journey and others like her, Lynette will be celebrated at the North West Breast Cancer Charity Ball on December 5, 2024. This event, taking place at the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny, will raise funds to support advancements at the Letterkenny Centre while honoring survivors and remembering those who have lost their battles with breast cancer.
The evening will feature special guest, legendary Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given, alongside MC Noel Cunningham. Tickets are priced at €60.00 per person and include a drinks reception, a three-course meal, and entertainment from the Beefsteak Dancers. Guests can purchase tickets at the hotel or by calling 074 91 25619.
As Lynette continues to advocate for breast cancer awareness, she encourages everyone to be vigilant and proactive about their health. “We all need to be very vigilant,” she concluded.
