€8.6 Million Initiative Launched to Combat Obesity in Northern Ireland
A significant initiative has been launched to combat obesity across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland, with an investment of €8.6 million. The program, named the CAWT Healthier Futures project, is designed to support approximately 9,000 individuals in understanding and modifying their behaviors related to diet and physical activity. This effort is backed by the PEACEPLUS program, which aims to foster cross-border cooperation.
The Healthier Futures project has two specific target groups. In Northern Ireland, it will focus on adults and families, while in the Republic of Ireland, the emphasis will be on children. The initiative will be implemented in several border counties, including Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Armagh, and Down.
As highlighted in the 2023/24 Health Survey in Northern Ireland, around 66% of adults are classified as either overweight or obese. The situation is similarly concerning in the Republic of Ireland, where data from the Health Service Executive (HSE) reveals that approximately 60% of adults and over 20% of children and young people fall into these categories.
Addressing Public Health Inequalities
At the launch event, Prof Donal O’Shea, a Consultant Endocrinologist and National Clinical Lead for Obesity at the HSE, emphasized that the challenges posed by obesity are among the most pressing global health issues today. He pointed out that effective weight management and the prevention of related health problems hinge on lifestyle choices, including nutrition and exercise.
The CAWT Healthier Futures project aims to address health inequalities by focusing on disadvantaged socio-economic groups, where obesity prevalence is notably higher. The initiative seeks not only to improve health outcomes but also to foster collaboration between statutory health services and community organizations.
Funding for this project underscores a commitment to proactive health management. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, Minister for Health in Ireland, expressed her support, stating, “I am delighted to support the launch of the Healthier Futures Project, which will establish a new community-based obesity prevention and management service.” Meanwhile, Mike Nesbitt, Health Minister in Northern Ireland, noted, “This initiative promotes healthier lives, reduces health inequalities, and strengthens cross-border collaboration.”
Collaboration for Effective Solutions
The project will not only enhance existing obesity management programs but also introduce innovative approaches and share best practices across the jurisdictions. Gina McIntyre, Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), remarked, “The Healthier Futures Project is an ambitious and timely initiative that brings together expertise, compassion, and collaboration to address one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time: obesity.”
The commitment to partnership is further emphasized by Pat Healy, HSE National Director, who stated, “The CAWT partner organizations are committed to partnership working and innovating cross-border services and projects.” He expressed gratitude for the PEACEPLUS funding, highlighting its potential to deliver tangible benefits to those living in border counties.
As the CAWT Healthier Futures project unfolds, it stands as a critical step towards improving health and well-being in communities affected by obesity across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The initiative’s focus on early intervention and community-based support aims to create lasting positive changes for children, families, and individuals facing obesity-related challenges.
