FSAI Issues Urgent Recall of Spinach and Mixed Leaves Due to Listeria

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has announced a recall of certain spinach and mixed leaves products due to the detection of listeria monocytogenes. The recall affects specific batches produced by McCormack Family Farms, prompting immediate action to notify retailers and consumers about the potential health risks associated with these products.
Two food alerts were issued over the weekend, detailing the affected batches. Retailers are required to remove these items from sale and prominently display recall notices at points of sale. Wholesalers and distributors must also inform their customers about the recall and provide relevant notice materials to retailers.
The FSAI clarified that there is currently no evidence linking this recall to an ongoing listeriosis outbreak connected to ready-to-heat meals, which is under investigation. Symptoms of listeria infection can range from mild flu-like signs to gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare instances, the infection can escalate to severe complications. Vulnerable populations—including pregnant women, babies, and individuals with weakened immune systems, including the elderly—are particularly at risk.
The incubation period for listeria monocytogenes infections typically averages three weeks, although it can vary between three and 70 days. Consumers are urged to refrain from consuming any implicated batches of spinach and mixed leaves products. Caterers have also been advised against using these batches in food preparation.
Health Risks and Consumer Guidance
The FSAI continues to monitor the situation closely. As part of its public health responsibility, it emphasizes the importance of food safety and consumer awareness. The authority encourages individuals to check their purchases and discard any affected products.
Food safety is paramount, and the recall serves as a reminder for consumers to remain vigilant regarding the products they consume. Retailers are expected to cooperate fully by taking swift action to mitigate any potential health risks associated with these contaminated items.
The FSAI will keep the public informed as new information becomes available, underscoring its commitment to ensuring food safety across Ireland.
