FSAI Issues Urgent Recall of Spinach and Mixed Leaves Over Listeria

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has initiated a recall of certain spinach and mixed leaves products due to concerns over the presence of listeria monocytogenes. This action follows the detection of the bacteria in batches supplied by McCormack Family Farms. Consumers are advised to avoid these products, as the potential health risks associated with listeria can be serious.
In a statement released on September 1, 2023, the FSAI confirmed that two separate food alerts were issued over the weekend, prompting retailers to remove the affected batches from sale. Recall notices will be displayed at points of sale to inform customers of the issue. The authority emphasized that there is currently no evidence linking this recall to the ongoing investigation into a separate listeriosis outbreak associated with ready-to-heat meals.
Symptoms of a listeria monocytogenes infection can manifest as mild flu-like symptoms or more severe gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. In rare cases, particularly among vulnerable populations, the infection can lead to serious complications. Those most at risk include pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The FSAI highlighted the importance of consumer awareness regarding the incubation period for listeria infections, which averages around three weeks but can range from three to seventy days. Retailers and distributors have been instructed to contact their affected customers to facilitate the recall and ensure appropriate point-of-sale notices are displayed.
Caterers are strongly advised against using the implicated batches. The FSAI urges consumers to remain vigilant and avoid any spinach or mixed leaves products that may be part of this recall to safeguard their health.
As the situation develops, the FSAI continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety.
