GAA Club Raises Over €93,000 for Brave Two-Year-Old Battling Cancer

A local GAA club has mobilized the community to raise significant funds for a two-year-old boy diagnosed with kidney cancer. Darragh Linnane, from Gort in Galway, received this life-altering diagnosis in February 2023. His parents, Darragh and Niamh, described how their world was “turned upside down” upon learning of the tumor on their son’s kidney.
Since the diagnosis, Darragh has undergone an intensive treatment regimen, including chemotherapy and surgery at Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Following his initial surgery, devastating news emerged: Darragh was found to have a rarer, more aggressive form of cancer. Consequently, he was placed on a new treatment plan that includes radiotherapy, which he completed at St. Luke’s Hospital, along with ongoing chemotherapy at Crumlin.
Darragh’s parents expressed the emotional toll of having a seriously ill child, stating, “Having a seriously ill child is one of the hardest crosses any parents have to bear, but we continue to hope and pray for his recovery.” They remain thankful for the support from family, friends, and the wider community during this challenging time.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
The Gort GAA Club has been particularly proactive in supporting the Linnane family. A fundraising campaign launched on GoFundMe has already raised an impressive €93,403 from more than 1,200 donations. The club announced plans for additional fundraising activities in the coming weeks, with details to follow.
In a message on the GoFundMe page titled “Donate for Baby Darragh Linnane,” the GAA club highlighted the long-standing ties between the Linnane and Killilea families and the club itself. “Gort GAA Club are showing our support for little Darragh Linnane,” they stated, showcasing the community’s commitment to helping the family in their time of need.
The response from the public has been overwhelming, with heartfelt messages pouring in for the young boy and his family. Comments range from messages of strength and encouragement to prayers for Darragh’s recovery. One supporter expressed, “Sending every bit of strength your way,” while another said, “Keeping you all in my prayers and wishing baby Darragh all the strength and courage he needs to fight this.”
Darragh’s Resilience and Family Bond
Despite the challenges he faces, Darragh is described by his parents as a “strong, bubbly, and courageous little boy.” His laughter and joyful spirit shine through even during this difficult time. Darragh’s parents also mentioned his close bond with his three older siblings: Cara (8), Cathal (6), and Éabha (4), who have shown remarkable support throughout his illness.
The Linnane family continues to navigate the complexities of Darragh’s health challenges, but they draw strength from the love and encouragement of their community. They remain hopeful for a positive outcome and express deep gratitude for the support they have received.
As the GAA club and local community continue their efforts to assist the Linnane family, the story of little Darragh serves as a poignant reminder of the strength that can arise during times of adversity. The ongoing fundraising initiatives highlight the power of community solidarity in facing life’s toughest challenges.
