Galway Residents Urged to Prepare for Healthcare Needs This Bank Holiday
Residents in Galway and Roscommon are encouraged to be aware of their healthcare options during the upcoming October Bank Holiday weekend. With an anticipated increase in emergency department visits, the Health Service Executive (HSE) West and North West is advising the public to plan ahead to ensure their safety and well-being.
As traffic increases over the holiday period, authorities stress the importance of safe driving. Emergency departments are expected to experience high patient volumes, leading to longer wait times. People are advised to consider alternative healthcare options before resorting to emergency services.
Utilizing Local Healthcare Services
For non-life-threatening injuries such as breaks, sprains, or minor wounds, individuals are encouraged to visit a HSE injury unit. These facilities provide a more efficient option compared to crowded emergency departments. The Roscommon Injury Unit, for instance, is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00 and does not require an appointment.
Ann Cosgrove, the HSE healthcare manager for Galway and Roscommon, noted the usual uptick in emergency department visits during holiday weekends. “Unfortunately, our emergency departments tend to be busier at holiday weekends than at other times of the year, but we have plans in place to manage high attendances,” she stated. Cosgrove emphasized that senior clinical decision-makers will be available throughout the weekend to facilitate patient flow and minimize delays.
In addition to injury units, local pharmacies will offer expert advice on a variety of common conditions. The HSE encourages individuals to utilize these resources before seeking more intensive medical care.
Accessing Out-of-Hours GP Services
For those requiring medical attention over the weekend, the out-of-hours GP service known as Westdoc will be available. This service operates all weekend, but appointments must be made in advance. Cosgrove highlighted the importance of having access to urgent care options, ensuring that patients can receive timely assistance.
As the season changes, the HSE also reminds the public to stay vigilant against respiratory illnesses, including flu and COVID-19. Residents are encouraged to ensure their vaccinations are up to date in order to reduce the risk of severe illness during the winter months.
In cases of genuine emergencies, individuals should not hesitate to visit the emergency department or call emergency services at 999 or 112. Cosgrove concluded with an essential reminder: “Please stay safe and look after your mental health as well as your physical health this long weekend.”
By staying informed and prepared, Galway and Roscommon residents can navigate the holiday weekend more safely, ensuring they have access to the necessary healthcare services when needed.
