Health Expert Warns Christmas Decor May Trigger Allergies
As the festive season approaches, many households across Ireland are preparing for celebrations. However, health expert Dr Neel Patel from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor has raised concerns about common Christmas items that could lead to allergic reactions and illness during this time.
Dr Patel highlights that seasonal decorations, typically stored away for most of the year, can accumulate dust, which may include allergens like pollen, mould spores, and dust mites. When these decorations are disturbed during the decorating process, the particles can become airborne, potentially triggering allergic responses in sensitive individuals.
To mitigate these risks, Dr Patel advises that households wipe down decorations with a damp cloth before use. Using airtight containers or vacuum bags for storage can also help minimize dust accumulation.
Potential Triggers in Holiday Decor
Another source of concern is the use of scented candles during the holidays. According to Dr Patel, many of these candles contain synthetic fragrances, dyes, and additives that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) upon burning. These chemicals can irritate the respiratory system, resulting in symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and nasal congestion. For those particularly sensitive to these substances, opting for unscented candles may be a safer choice.
Dr Patel also points to the risk posed by real Christmas trees and festive wreaths. When these natural decorations are brought indoors, they can introduce mould spores into the home environment. The warm and dry indoor conditions can cause these spores to become airborne, leading to allergy symptoms.
“Mould spores are a common allergen,” Dr Patel explains. “When inhaled or contacted, especially by individuals sensitive to moulds, they can trigger reactions including sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and itchy eyes. Those with asthma or a history of allergies to real trees may want to consider using artificial decorations instead.”
As families prepare to celebrate, awareness of these common household items can help prevent allergic reactions and ensure a healthier holiday season.
