HSE Launches Winter Vaccination Programme for Flu and COVID-19
The Health Service Executive (HSE) of Ireland has initiated its Winter Vaccination Programme this week, providing free vaccines for both influenza and COVID-19. The programme aims to protect the population during the winter months when respiratory illnesses peak. Vaccines are available through participating GPs and pharmacies, allowing individuals to receive both vaccinations simultaneously or at different times.
In addition to general availability, HSE vaccination teams will administer the flu and COVID-19 vaccines to residents of nursing homes and to housebound individuals. This targeted approach ensures that vulnerable populations have access to these critical immunizations.
Free Vaccinations for Children and Healthcare Workers
The programme also includes a free nasal spray flu vaccine for children aged between 2 and 17 years. Parents can obtain this vaccine from GPs, pharmacies, and, in some cases, schools. The nasal spray is designed to be safe, effective, and painless, making it an appealing option for younger patients.
Healthcare worker vaccination clinics will be established in various workplaces across the country, reinforcing the importance of immunization among those on the front lines of health care. Dr. Emer Liddy, a Public Health Specialist Registrar with the HSE in Dublin and the South East, emphasized the urgency of vaccination during this season. She stated, “As we enter the winter season, I encourage everyone who is eligible for the flu and COVID-19 vaccines to get vaccinated. Getting a vaccine is the most effective way to protect yourself, your family, and your community from serious illness in the months ahead.”
Addressing Serious Health Risks
Flu and COVID-19 can result in severe complications, leading to hospitalizations, intensive care admissions, and even fatalities. Last winter, Ireland witnessed nearly 6,500 hospitalizations due to the flu, alongside over 2,000 hospitalizations related to COVID-19. These figures highlight the critical need for widespread vaccination as the winter progresses.
Additionally, the HSE is offering RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) immunization clinics for infants born between March 1, 2025, and August 31, 2025. These clinics will remain open until October 12, 2025, providing another layer of protection for young children during the winter months.
For those seeking guidance on recommended vaccinations, the HSE encourages individuals to visit their website, contact HSELive at 1800 700 700, or consult with a participating GP or pharmacy. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the risks associated with respiratory illnesses this winter, ensuring community health remains a priority.
