HSE Urges Eligible Individuals to Get Free Flu Vaccination
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is actively encouraging eligible residents in Donegal to take advantage of the free flu vaccination program. As of November 6, 2025, there has been a notable increase in influenza cases and hospital admissions across Ireland, prompting this urgent public health message. The most significant rise in cases has been reported among adults aged 65 and older.
The HSE is providing free flu vaccines at participating GP clinics, pharmacies, and community health centres throughout Donegal. Vaccination teams will also administer the flu vaccine to individuals living in residential care facilities, including nursing homes, as well as to housebound patients. Furthermore, a nasal spray flu vaccine is available at no cost for all children aged 2 to 17 years, ensuring that young patients can receive a safe and painless option for vaccination.
Who Should Get Vaccinated
The flu vaccine is strongly recommended for several groups and is available free of charge to:
– Individuals aged 60 years and older
– Those with underlying medical conditions
– Healthcare workers, including students in healthcare and social care
– All children aged 2-17 years
– Pregnant women at any stage of their pregnancy
– Carers and household contacts of individuals at higher risk
– Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
– People with regular close contact with poultry, waterfowl, or pigs
Importance of Vaccination and Preventive Measures
With the ongoing flu season, the HSE emphasizes the importance of vaccination as a means to protect not only individual health but also the health of the broader community. To further mitigate the spread of infection, individuals are advised to follow simple preventive measures. These include staying at home when feeling unwell, maintaining good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, and ensuring adequate ventilation in indoor spaces.
Additionally, residents are encouraged to check in on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours during this busy season. Should anyone in the household fall ill, the HSE advises visiting their website for guidance on managing symptoms and determining when to seek medical assistance.
