Kilkenny Nursing Home Achieves Notable Improvement in HIQA Report

Tinnypark Nursing Home in Kilkenny has shown significant improvement following a recent report from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). The new findings, released on March 7, 2024, indicate a positive shift in compliance since a previous inspection in January, which highlighted serious shortcomings in care standards.

The January inspection revealed ten areas of non-compliance, leading to only one rating of compliant. This prompted concerns from Senator Patricia Stephenson, who emphasized the need for immediate action. The follow-up report, however, indicates progress, with four compliance ratings achieved and only one area marked as non-compliant, alongside nine instances of substantial compliance.

Residents of Tinnypark expressed satisfaction with the care they receive. Many reported feeling content, stating they “love it here” and appreciated the attention from staff. Observations of non-verbal residents showed they appeared comfortable and well-cared for.

Improvements and Continuing Challenges

Key areas that received commendations included staffing levels, where management vacancies had been filled. There were also adequate housekeeping and laundry staff on duty. Nevertheless, the facility still faces challenges with overall staff shortages.

One critical issue noted during the January inspection was the lack of security for residents’ private information. Sensitive records were found visible on computers in public areas, and files were stored in an unlocked meeting room. These issues have since been addressed, contributing to the improved compliance rating.

In addition to enhanced security measures, the report highlighted commendable practices regarding residents’ access to personal belongings and protective measures in place. However, significant challenges remain, particularly in the area of individual care and assessment plans. The inspection noted that one resident assessed as being at high risk for pressure ulcers had not received a prevention care plan for ten months prior to the inspection. Similarly, another resident at medium risk of malnutrition lacked a nutrition care plan, and there were gaps in the frequency of malnutrition risk assessments, reflecting ongoing issues from previous evaluations.

Looking Ahead

Despite the progress made within a short time frame, with one significant non-compliance rating and nine less serious issues still outstanding, the management at Tinnypark has outlined a comprehensive compliance plan. This plan aims to address all identified problems and sustain the momentum of improvement in care quality.

The turnaround from the January findings to the March report is commendable. It reflects the dedication of the staff and management at Tinnypark to enhance the quality of life for their residents.
