Majority Prefer Home Care Options Over Nursing Homes, New Poll Reveals
A recent poll has highlighted the preferences of older adults in Ireland regarding their living arrangements as they age. According to the survey conducted by Red C for Mayo Social in December 2023, only one in twelve respondents indicated they would choose to live in a nursing home. The majority expressed a strong desire to remain in their own homes, with over 90% of participants emphasizing the urgent need for housing that includes support for older individuals.
The research, which surveyed a representative sample of 1,082 adults, revealed significant insights into the emotional and practical considerations surrounding elder care. When asked about their preferences, 70% of older respondents stated that leaving their homes would be emotionally challenging, while only 6% felt that adequate independent living options were available. A mere 8% expressed a willingness to move into a nursing home, with many indicating they would only consider such a move if their health circumstances worsened.
Respondents showed a clear preference for care options that allow them to remain in familiar environments. Most favored daily visits from a carer, which was particularly popular among older men. According to the poll, the ideal support services would be provided by the Health Service Executive (HSE), with local authorities receiving less favorable consideration.
Community-Based Care Preferred
The survey also explored preferences for nursing home alternatives. If relocation became necessary, respondents indicated a preference for community-based units that offer access to a general practitioner or advanced nurse practitioner. This highlights a broader trend toward community-oriented care solutions that prioritize maintaining social connections among older adults.
The findings illustrate a strong consensus regarding the importance of diverse housing options in fostering vibrant communities. Over 75% of respondents agreed that a balanced mix of housing is essential for thriving towns and villages, a sentiment particularly resonant among older populations.
Mervyn Taylor, spokesperson for Mayo Social, commented on the implications of the poll results. “There is a lot of focus on housing following the recent launch of the new strategy, Delivering Homes Building Communities,” he stated. “However, the key is in the full title, ‘building communities.’ The Red C Poll shows strong public support for communities where people can age in place.”
This initiative aims to address the challenges posed by an ageing society by developing a range of community-based supports to meet the health and social care needs of older individuals. Taylor emphasized the necessity of fostering social connectedness, which is critical for the well-being of seniors.
The findings of this poll offer valuable insights into the preferences and concerns of older adults in Ireland, underscoring the need for policy adjustments and community planning that align with their desires to age in place.
