Michael D Higgins Hospitalised with Infection Ahead of Departure
Michael D Higgins, the President of Ireland, has been hospitalised due to a localised infection, according to an official update from his office. The 14-year tenure of Ireland’s President is drawing to a close, with Catherine Connolly set to succeed him in the coming days. Mr. Higgins attended St James’s Hospital for examination and treatment, after which he remained overnight for further care.
In a statement to the Irish Independent, his office confirmed that Mr. Higgins was in good spirits while receiving antibiotics. They noted, “The President travelled to St James Hospital yesterday to have a localised infection examined. The President, who is in good spirits, remained in hospital overnight to receive antibiotics.” Reports indicate that he could be discharged as early as today, with no significant concerns about his health.
Throughout his presidency, Mr. Higgins has faced various health challenges. Notably, in 2024, he suffered a mild stroke that required hospitalisation. He later disclosed to The Journal, “It’s very straightforward. On 29 February, I had a mild stroke in my office. It affected my left side. It had no effect on me cognitively.” Following the stroke, he underwent physiotherapy to improve his balance, using two sticks for walking due to previous arthritis complications.
Mr. Higgins expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the public, stating, “The people of Ireland have been wonderful, kind, considerate and appreciative of the fact that I need, in fact, to go to a seat in a different stadium a bit slower. But their enthusiasm and mind for sport remains the same.”
His presidency has been marked by both domestic and international engagements, reflecting his commitment to public service. As he prepares to transition out of office, the nation watches closely to see how he navigates this final chapter of his presidency while managing his health.
