New Crisis Resolution Service to Enhance Mental Health Support in Donegal

A new Crisis Resolution Service will be implemented in Donegal, supported by a budget allocation of €1.3 million for 2026. This initiative aims to provide immediate assistance and support for individuals aged 18 and older experiencing mental health crises. The service will recruit ten new staff members to create a community-based multidisciplinary team focused on delivering rapid assessment and intensive care.
Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler, announced the establishment of this service, which is designed to respond effectively to urgent mental health needs. Donegal Minister of State Charlie McConalogue praised the initiative, emphasizing its importance for the local community. He expressed gratitude to Minister Butler and her team for their efforts in developing this essential resource.
The Crisis Resolution teams will offer tailored support, typically for an average duration of six weeks. This flexibility allows them to address the varying needs of service users and their carers. Treatment will be delivered in a range of settings, including home visits, community locations, or through virtual consultations. The teams will operate extended hours and aim to provide a seven-day service to ensure accessibility.
In addition to the Crisis Resolution Service, the region will benefit from the introduction of Solace Cafés, which offer out-of-hours crisis prevention and response services. These cafés will operate in collaboration with various community organizations and provide a welcoming, non-clinical environment. Open during evenings and weekends, Solace Cafés will serve as supportive spaces where individuals can learn coping strategies and access a variety of mental health resources.
Minister McConalogue highlighted the significance of the cafés, noting that staff will assist visitors by directing them to relevant mental health and well-being services in their area. Individuals seeking support at these cafés will also have access to one-on-one consultations, peer support, and psychosocial recovery programs.
The framework for the Crisis Resolution Services was officially launched by Minister Butler in May 2023, outlining how such services should be organized and integrated across health and community sectors in Ireland. The new developments in Donegal reflect a broader commitment to enhancing mental health services throughout the country.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing the urgent mental health needs of the Donegal community, with the aim of providing timely and effective support to those in crisis. The establishment of the Crisis Resolution Service and Solace Cafés illustrates a proactive approach to mental health care, prioritizing community engagement and accessible resources for all.
