Over 626,000 Patients Await First Outpatient Consultations
More than 626,000 patients were on waiting lists for their first hospital outpatient consultation in September 2025, according to data from the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF). Of these, over 72,000 were children, highlighting significant pressures on the healthcare system.
In addition to the outpatient figures, the NTPF reported that more than 100,000 patients were waiting for inpatient or day-case appointments during the same month. This backlog represents a growing challenge for healthcare providers as they strive to meet patient needs amid increasing demands.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has indicated that it expects waiting list volumes to stabilize, projecting improvements in performance as 2025 draws to a close. The HSE’s optimism comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance patient care by addressing waiting times and increasing service capacity.
The Department of Health has committed to working closely with the HSE and the NTPF to drive improvements in waiting list performance. This includes regular assessments and adjustments to healthcare strategies aimed at reducing patient backlog and enhancing service delivery.
As the number of patients waiting for consultations continues to rise, the urgency for systemic reform in the healthcare sector has become increasingly apparent. Stakeholders are calling for comprehensive solutions to ensure that patients receive timely access to necessary medical care.
In light of these significant figures, the healthcare system in Ireland faces a pivotal moment, demanding focus and action from all relevant parties to alleviate the pressures on patients and healthcare providers alike.
