Pharmacy Technician Discovers Prostate Cancer After Routine Test

Mark McCormick, a pharmacy technician from Donegal, received a shocking diagnosis of prostate cancer following a routine blood test. This unexpected revelation highlights the importance of regular health screenings, especially for men over the age of 50.

In May 2023, McCormick visited his General Practitioner for a routine blood test related to a separate medical condition. He was taken aback when he learned that his Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels were alarmingly elevated. “Prostate cancer wasn’t on my radar,” he stated. “I was very surprised when I received the call from my GP.”

After his diagnosis, McCormick was referred to the Rapid Action Prostate Cancer Clinic at the Mater Hospital in Dublin. Although he had no symptoms at the time, he was aware that symptoms of prostate cancer can be subtle and challenging to detect.

Shocking Developments and Treatment Journey

Following an MRI at the clinic, McCormick discovered that he had a tumour and two growths in his prostate. A subsequent biopsy confirmed the cancerous nature of these growths. In July 2023, he underwent surgery to remove the tumour but faced another unexpected setback.

“Unfortunately, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to my tailbone,” he said. This was especially surprising given that his PSA levels had been normal just months earlier. After swift medical intervention, he began radiotherapy in September 2023 to address the cancer in his tailbone.

Despite initial progress, McCormick faced additional challenges. Scans in December 2023 revealed that the cancer had spread to multiple areas, including his bones, pelvis, and hip. By January 2024, he learned that his cancer was classified as Stage 4, a devastating blow.

“I started chemotherapy in February 2024 but had an allergic reaction during the first session,” he recalled. Subsequent attempts at chemotherapy in March and April also resulted in allergic reactions, preventing him from continuing that treatment. Since then, he has been on hormone therapy to manage the disease and prevent its spread.

Raising Awareness and Encouraging Testing

McCormick emphasizes the importance of proactive health measures for men, particularly regarding PSA testing. “Men need to be aware of their health and get checked regularly, especially once they reach the age of 50,” he said. “Early detection is key, as prostate cancer is very treatable when caught early.”

According to the Irish Cancer Society, approximately 4,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in Ireland, meaning one in six men will face this diagnosis in their lifetime. The organization highlights that prostate cancer often presents no noticeable symptoms in the early stages, making it crucial for men to undergo regular testing.

Symptoms can include frequent urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urination, and blood in urine or semen. However, many of these symptoms can also indicate non-cancerous conditions.

McCormick believes a nationwide screening program could significantly impact prostate cancer detection and treatment. While a pilot program exists in Tallaght and St Vincent’s hospitals, he advocates for a broader rollout. “A national screening programme, similar to breast and bowel screening initiatives, could prevent many cancers from developing,” he stated.

Despite the challenges he faces, McCormick strives to maintain a sense of normalcy. He owns and operates Dodder Park Allcare Pharmacy in Rathfarnham, Dublin, and remains dedicated to his work. “It’s important for me to keep some normality in my life,” he said. “Prostate cancer isn’t like some other cancers – you can live for many years with it if it is managed well by your oncology team.”
