President Michael D Higgins Hospitalized for Overnight Care
President Michael D Higgins was admitted to hospital on Sunday evening for a precautionary overnight stay, according to a statement from the official residence, Áras an Uachtaráin. The President visited St James’s Hospital to have a localized infection examined and will receive antibiotics during his stay.
The 84-year-old President is reported to be in good spirits and is expected to return to Áras an Uachtaráin following his overnight treatment. This hospitalization comes just days before he completes his second term, which concludes on November 10, 2025, shortly before Catherine Connolly is inaugurated as his successor.
Last year, President Higgins experienced a mild stroke, described at the time by Áras an Uachtaráin as a “transitory weakness.” He later clarified that there was no cognitive impairment resulting from the incident.
An analysis by The Irish Times highlighted a decline in the President’s public engagements, which dropped from over 28 per month in 2019 to approximately 15 per month in the recent years. This decrease reflects the challenges of his health and the implications of his age on his official duties.
Upon leaving Áras an Uachtaráin, President Higgins plans to return to his home in Rahoon, Galway. He has expressed intentions to continue his work on food security and to pursue his passion for writing, including poetry and unfinished books.
The public has shown concern for the President’s health but remains hopeful for his swift recovery and continued contributions to societal issues.
