Ulster University Launches €20 Million Health Projects in Derry
On September 17, 2025, Ulster University announced the launch of two significant cross-border health research projects in Derry, with an investment exceeding €20 million. These initiatives, named iMPROVE and PEACETIME, aim to enhance health outcomes for individuals living with chronic conditions in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and Scotland.
The iMPROVE project is designed to assist up to 10,000 people across the border regions by focusing on personalized medicine for those with long-term health issues. This approach seeks to tailor healthcare to the specific needs of individuals, potentially improving their quality of life. Meanwhile, the PEACETIME project aims to broaden access to obesity care, addressing a critical public health concern that affects many across the regions involved.
Both projects will be based at Ulster University’s Magee campus in Derry. The university highlights that these ambitious initiatives not only aim to support individual health through personalized medication reviews and integrated obesity care but also intend to foster collaboration between healthcare systems across borders.
Professor David Gibson, Principal Investigator for iMPROVE and a leading expert in pharmacogenomics, will spearhead efforts to develop a community-based approach to personalized prescribing. His work focuses on ensuring that patients receive medications tailored to their genetic profiles, enhancing effectiveness and safety.
On the other hand, Professor Alex Miras, Principal Investigator for PEACETIME and Clinical Professor in Medicine, is recognized internationally for his contributions to obesity care. He is committed to creating multidisciplinary treatment models that can provide sustainable health outcomes for those struggling with obesity.
These projects reflect Ulster University’s commitment to improving health services and outcomes in the region. By focusing on personalized and accessible healthcare, they aim to create a lasting impact on the communities involved.
In summary, the launch of the iMPROVE and PEACETIME projects represents a significant step forward in addressing chronic health issues through innovative research and collaboration. As these initiatives take shape, they hold the potential to transform healthcare delivery for thousands of individuals in Derry and beyond.
