Urgent Call for Blood Donations in Donegal Amidst Supply Shortage
Supplies of blood are critically low in Ireland, prompting the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) to issue an urgent appeal for public support. Blood donation clinics are currently taking place in Donegal to address the shortage, which affects multiple blood groups across the country.
The IBTS has reported that current blood supplies are “under 3 days,” indicating an alarming situation that could impact patient care. Paul McKinney, the Director of Donor Services and Logistics at IBTS, emphasized the importance of immediate action to replenish these vital resources. He stated, “We need the public’s help to ensure we can meet the demand for blood transfusions.”
Donation Opportunities in Ballybofey
Today, October 15, 2025, blood donation clinics are operating at Jackson’s Hotel in Ballybofey. The clinics are open from 15:00 to 17:00 and again from 19:00 to 21:30. They will continue tomorrow, October 16, with additional sessions from 12:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 19:30. The IBTS encourages local residents to participate and contribute to the much-needed blood supply.
The need for blood donations is particularly critical as hospitals prepare for upcoming medical procedures and emergencies. McKinney noted that the response from the community is vital in ensuring that those in need receive timely medical treatment.
Individuals interested in donating blood are advised to check their eligibility and prepare accordingly. The IBTS reminds potential donors that the entire donation process typically takes less than an hour and can make a significant difference in the lives of patients requiring blood transfusions.
In light of the current situation, community support is essential. Every donation counts, and those who are eligible are encouraged to visit the clinics at Jackson’s Hotel today or tomorrow.
As the IBTS continues to monitor the situation, they remain hopeful that public participation will help stabilize blood supplies in the region. For more information on blood donation and eligibility requirements, visit the IBTS website or contact their local offices.
