Urgent Recall of Turmeric Powder in Ireland Due to Salmonella Risk
An urgent health warning has been issued to households across Ireland following the recall of a popular cooking spice due to concerns over Salmonella contamination. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced on October 6, 2023, that specific batches of AliBaba Haldi Powder, commonly known as turmeric powder, are being removed from shelves.
The recall affects batches identified by the batch code 080824 and with a best before date of April 22, 2026. Consumers are strongly advised not to consume these products, as the presence of Salmonella poses serious health risks. Turmeric is widely used in various cuisines, known for its vibrant colour and health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties.
The FSAI has instructed retailers, including supermarkets and market stalls, to immediately remove the affected batches from sale. Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores carrying the implicated product. This precautionary measure is vital in ensuring consumer safety. Additionally, caterers, restaurants, and cafes are urged to cease using these batches immediately.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically appear within 12 to 36 hours after exposure, although they can manifest anywhere between six and 72 hours. The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which may be bloody in some cases. Other symptoms can include fever, headache, and abdominal cramps, with the illness generally lasting from four to seven days. Vulnerable populations such as the elderly, infants, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness.
This recall follows a recent alert issued by the FSAI regarding potential contamination in several baking products sold at major supermarkets in Ireland. On October 2, 2023, five specific batches of desiccated coconut products were recalled due to fears they may contain plastic pieces. These products, imported from Indonesia, were promptly removed from store shelves, and retailers have been displaying recall notices to inform customers of the situation.
The FSAI continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages consumers to report any adverse reactions related to the consumption of the affected products. Public awareness is crucial in preventing illness and ensuring food safety across the nation.
