Urgent Vaccination Call as Flu Hospitalizations Surge 100%
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is urging all eligible individuals to get vaccinated against influenza as hospital admissions have alarmingly doubled in just one week due to a new virulent strain. Official data indicates that presentations to emergency departments and subsequent hospitalizations related to flu surged from 213 cases to 418 during the week ending November 29, 2023. This sharp increase highlights a concerning trend of rising flu cases across communities.
In Limerick, the figures reflect a national pattern, prompting health officials to take immediate action. Dr. Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer of the HSE, emphasized the urgency of vaccination, stating, “We are seeing a rapid increase in cases of patients with influenza, including those needing hospitalisation.” He noted that the influenza season has started earlier than usual, raising concerns for vulnerable populations, including individuals over 60 years of age, those with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
Immediate Action Required for Vulnerable Groups
Dr. Henry stressed the importance of these groups taking action now to secure necessary protection. He specifically urged healthcare workers to get vaccinated, highlighting their increased risk of exposure. “By getting vaccinated, healthcare workers protect themselves, their families, and the patients they care for,” he said.
The flu vaccine typically takes two weeks to become fully effective, making it crucial to get vaccinated before infection rates peak during the busy holiday season. Dr. Eamonn O’Moore, Director of HSE National Health Protection, added, “People can also play an important role in breaking the chain of transmission by following respiratory etiquette, such as covering coughs and sneezes, regular hand washing, and staying home when unwell.”
Accessing Flu Vaccines and Preventive Measures
Free flu vaccines are currently available at participating general practitioner (GP) clinics and pharmacies. Healthcare workers can access free vaccinations through staff clinics and community healthcare providers. Furthermore, all children aged 2 to 17 years are recommended to receive the free flu vaccine.
For additional information on the flu vaccine, including locations for vaccination, the public is encouraged to visit the HSE website at www.hse.ie/flu. As the flu season progresses, health officials continue to advocate for proactive measures to protect both individual and public health.
