82-Year-Old James O’Reilly Graduates from DCU with Pride
James O’Reilly, an 82-year-old learner, celebrated a significant milestone by graduating from Dublin City University (DCU) with a Bachelor of Arts in English and History. O’Reilly was among over 4,600 graduates participating in the ceremony held in October 2023, and he proudly received a 2.1 grade classification, marking him as one of the oldest individuals to graduate from the institution.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, O’Reilly expressed his belief that age should not limit one’s pursuit of education. He remarked, “I’m old enough to have more sense,” highlighting the value of lifelong learning. His journey through academia exemplifies determination and the belief that it is never too late to achieve educational goals.
O’Reilly’s graduation story has captured the attention of many, serving as an inspiration for those considering returning to education later in life. His academic journey began after he retired, demonstrating that personal growth and development do not have to cease with age.
Dublin City University has long been known for its commitment to inclusivity and support for mature students. The institution’s efforts to create a welcoming environment for learners of all ages have made it a popular choice for individuals seeking to further their education, regardless of when they choose to embark on that path.
In addition to O’Reilly’s achievement, the graduation ceremony featured a range of speakers and events that celebrated the diverse accomplishments of this year’s graduates. The university celebrated not only academic excellence but also the personal journeys that each student undertook to reach this significant point in their lives.
As O’Reilly looks to the future, he hopes to continue sharing his passion for learning with others. His story serves as a reminder that education is a lifelong journey, and the pursuit of knowledge can occur at any stage of life.
O’Reilly’s graduation is more than a personal triumph; it reflects a broader societal shift towards valuing education at all ages. As more individuals embrace the idea of lifelong learning, stories like his will likely inspire future generations to follow suit.
