Aran RNLI Celebrates New Leadership and Volunteer Achievements
The Aran Islands RNLI has welcomed new leadership and celebrated significant volunteer achievements in recent activities. Last week, the lifeboat crew at the station was pleased to announce the appointment of Avril Ní Shearcaigh as the new Lifeboat Operations Manager. Her appointment comes alongside the successful assessments of several volunteers who have completed crucial training requirements.
In particular, volunteers Stacy Ní Iarnáin and Fionn Ó Flaithearta earned the title of Launch Authority after successfully passing their assessments. This vital role involves coordinating the lifeboat’s launch upon requests from the Irish Coast Guard, where they liaise directly with the coxswain and notify the lifeboat crew.
Another volunteer, Peter Alan Joyce, achieved his Tier One Crew plan certification after extensive training. His assessment covered essential skills including anchoring, rope handling, and local knowledge, all critical for the effective operation of the lifeboat.
Avril Ní Shearcaigh’s return to the Aran Islands station marks a significant moment for the team. Having previously served as a crew member, she now takes on the responsibility of managing all operational activities at the station. A mother of four and manager of Comharchumann Fuinnimh Oileáin Árainn, Avril brings valuable leadership experience to her new role.
“It’s been a busy year for all our volunteers, with 56 launches so far this year,” Avril said. “The lifeboat is our lifeline, so I’m happy to be a part of the team that keeps it ready to respond whenever it’s needed and help continue saving lives at sea.”
In addition to recognizing the achievements of the new Launch Authorities and Crew member, the station also celebrated the success of Ciaran Doyle, who recently completed training on Inis Mór and was certified as a Severn Class Coxswain.
Avril expressed her pride in the accomplishments of her team, stating, “I would like to congratulate Stacy, Fionn, and Peter Alan for passing their assessments. We are delighted for Ciaran, and we look forward to working with him in the near future.”
The Aran Islands RNLI continues to play a crucial role in maritime safety, with dedicated volunteers ready to respond to emergencies at sea. The leadership of Avril Ní Shearcaigh promises to enhance the operational effectiveness of the station, ensuring that the lifeboat remains a vital resource for the community.
