Cavan Nursing Home Residents Share Heartfelt Advice for Youth

Residents of the College View Nursing Home in County Cavan, Ireland, have come together to share their life experiences and wisdom with the younger generation. In 2021, the nursing home’s residents collaborated with Activities Coordinators to compile a list of advice that they believe can guide and inspire young people today. The heartwarming messages were displayed on a board and subsequently shared on social media, resonating with many.
Each resident contributed their thoughts, humorously choosing to declare their age as a youthful 21 years old. This playful approach emphasizes the notion that age is often defined by how one feels rather than a mere number. Among the residents, Helen Faulkner offered a lighthearted perspective, saying, “Have fun, be happy, do the lotto!” Her positive outlook captures the spirit of joy that permeated the list.
Another resident, Nancy Cahill, shared insightful advice based on her own experiences: “Have more confidence, I was very shy. Get up off your bum and drive! Most importantly, be nice.” This blend of encouragement and personal reflection serves as a reminder for young people to embrace confidence and kindness in their daily lives.
Susan Jordan‘s advice was equally thoughtful. She urged the youth to “See more of Ireland. Enjoy life while you can. Walk every day. Thank the Lord for good health.” Her message underscores the importance of appreciating one’s surroundings and maintaining well-being, themes that resonate deeply in today’s fast-paced world.
Among the other contributions, Mary McGoldrick wisely noted, “Life passes by so fast, so slow down!” This sentiment reflects a common theme among the residents: the necessity of taking time to appreciate life’s moments. Micheal Smith succinctly summarized the balance of life with his advice: “Work hard, play harder.”
The compilation of advice goes beyond individual contributions, encompassing a wealth of experience and insight. Some additional pieces of wisdom shared include:
– Go to the dance
– Enjoy yourself
– Go to the cinema
– Hop on that plane/travel more
– Be happy in your job
– Be careful with money
– Have lots of friends
– Be kind to animals
– Surround yourself with good people
– Study hard
With hundreds of years of collective life experience among them, the residents at College View Nursing Home have crafted a guide that embodies optimism and practical life lessons. Their heartfelt messages are not only a treasure for young people but also a beautiful reminder of the value of intergenerational connections.
As society continues to evolve, the wisdom shared by these residents serves as a beacon of light, encouraging the youth to seize the day and embrace life fully.
