Charming 1920s Terrace Near Rathfarnham Castle Lists for €550,000
A terrace house in Rathfarnham, Dublin, has entered the market with an asking price of €550,000. Located at 16 Saint Mary’s Avenue, this three-bedroom home combines period charm with modern enhancements, making it an appealing option for prospective buyers.
The property is situated near the historic Rathfarnham Castle, a 16th-century residence that adds to the area’s allure. The house itself was built around 1920 and features a ground floor extension completed in 1995 that significantly increases its space. The extension includes an additional bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and utility room.
Alistair Veltom, an IT professional originally from Greystones, and his wife, occupational therapist Emma Fox, purchased the home in 2020. They had not previously explored Rathfarnham but were drawn to the property’s character during their search across Dublin. “We wanted a house with character,” Fox remarked.
The home spans approximately 1,034 sq ft and was in good condition upon their arrival, requiring minimal structural work. They focused mainly on interior design, enhancing the space to reflect their style. A teal-colored front door welcomes visitors into a bright hallway adorned with turquoise and grey patterned tiles.
The sitting room features original details, including a cast iron Victorian chimney piece, which Veltom and Fox enjoy using during winter evenings. “It’s where we relax at the end of the day when the kids are in bed,” Fox shared.
Further down the hallway, the couple transformed a former dining room into a living space, adding a herringbone wooden floor and a feature blue wall. “We spent four years living in Singapore before moving back to Ireland,” Veltom noted. Their travels inspired their decor, which incorporates Asian-style furniture and art pieces.
The kitchen benefits from ample natural light thanks to a skylight and glass doors that connect it to the dining area. Fox described it as a “lovely spot at any time of year.” The couple upgraded appliances and painted the kitchen cabinets to match the light aesthetic.
Upstairs, the home accommodates two additional bedrooms and a uniquely designed bathroom that retains its original open fire feature. The outdoor space, while compact, is well-utilized and benefits from sunlight throughout the day.
The location of the house is particularly advantageous, as it lies within walking distance of Rathfarnham Village and is only a two-minute walk to a bus stop, providing easy access to Dublin’s city centre. Both Rathfarnham and Nutgrove shopping centres are just a five-minute drive away, enhancing the convenience for residents.
Veltom and Fox have created fond memories in their home, having welcomed their daughters, Rua and Noa, during their time there. “Our goal is to stay in Rathfarnham, as we love the area and have been very happy here,” Veltom expressed.
Despite their attachment, the family is now seeking more space as their children grow. “It’s really a beautiful home in a great location,” Fox concluded. DNG is currently handling the sale and is keen to find the next owners for this charming property.
