Cherie Lunghi Celebrates John Boorman at Cork Film Festival

Cherie Lunghi will attend the Cork International Film Festival this week to honor acclaimed director John Boorman, known for his significant contributions to cinema, including the celebrated film Excalibur. Lunghi, who played Guinevere in Boorman’s 1981 epic, reflects on her journey from the film’s production to her successful career.

Lunghi recalls her first experience in Ireland while filming Excalibur, which was pivotal in shaping the Irish film industry. The movie, with its stunning visuals and an exceptional cast that included Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne, was shot primarily in County Wicklow and at Ardmore Studios. It became a critical and commercial success, contributing to the modern Irish cinema landscape.

Reflecting on the early days of production, Lunghi emphasizes Boorman’s commitment to her as an actress. She had been performing as Viola in Twelfth Night with the Royal Shakespeare Company when she auditioned for the role of Guinevere. “There were some logistical problems,” she explains. “They really bent over backwards at John’s behest just to accommodate my career.”

During the first month of filming, Lunghi would be driven from her theatre performances to the airport for private flights to the film set, a unique experience she cherishes. “I remember moonlight, stars, and the sea glimmering below,” she reminisces. Upon arrival, a porter would greet her with sandwiches and hot chocolate, allowing her to recharge before diving into the film’s demanding schedule.

This week, Lunghi will accept the Honorary Screen Disruptor Award at the Cork festival on behalf of Boorman. The award recognizes the contributions of filmmakers who challenge conventions. Following the award ceremony, attendees will enjoy a screening of Boorman’s film Zardoz. The event will feature tributes from notable colleagues, including Brendan Gleeson and Juliette Binoche.

Lunghi expresses her excitement about celebrating Boorman’s work. “It’s manifold, really,” she says. “I’m thrilled to be part of paying tribute to John as a great director. It’s lovely because it’s brought back so many happy memories.” As she prepares to explore Cork, she looks forward to screening films at the festival and discovering the city’s charm.

Recalling her time on the Excalibur set, Lunghi describes the atmosphere of excitement among the cast and crew. “I knew that I was with this very talented and respected director,” she reflects. She fondly remembers how actors like Neeson and Ciarán Hinds crafted their characters, making the film a collaborative effort of artistry.

While preparing for her role, Lunghi developed a passion for horse riding, encouraged by the locals. She spent her time off exploring Ireland’s stunning countryside, an experience she describes as “magical.” The film’s themes of enchantment resonated with her personal journey, underscoring the impact of her early experiences in the industry.

Lunghi credits Boorman for her casting and the essential support she received, which she considers a turning point in her career. “It was a huge confidence boost, a great experience,” she recalls. Following Excalibur, she built a diverse career, appearing in works like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and The Mission, and even leading an advertising campaign for Kenco coffee.

Her mother’s influence played a crucial role in her journey. “She was incredible,” Lunghi says, recounting how her mother fostered her love for cinema. Memories of watching Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator and discovering European filmmakers shaped her aspirations.

Lunghi reflects, “I feel so fortunate. I had wonderful opportunities, and they’ve taken me all over the world.” As she prepares to celebrate Boorman’s legacy, she also appreciates the journey that brought her to this moment, a testament to her resilience and dedication to her craft.
